i am not going to start a war by saying what is best, but i'll tell you what i have been using as resources.

first and foremost...talkbass.com

harmony central has a ton of user reviews on almost everything.

bgra.net has good reviews as well.

looking at individual manufacturers websites help a lot and most have forums or message boards.

basstasters is great, their review selection is growing

for shopping, i use bass central and bassnw to see a wide selection of great gear quickly. once i find something i like i check out the manufacturers website.

Best site to buy from is The Groove Shoppe . They stock the cream of the cream of the crop, and their customer service is beyond compare. David Beasley's knowledge of basses is unsurpassed IMO, and you will get the best instrument for your money.

Bass Tasters

I wouldn't say which is the "best" anything. I recently found http://www.basstasters.com. They have sound files you can download of things like bass preamps and strings. I think one of the founders is a TB'er.

You should probably qualify that as not everyone here is interested in buying a boutique or multi-thousand dollar bass. Perhaps that's a good site for that particular niche?

I don't see anyone else qualifying their recommendations, why should it only apply to myself?

Just for the record, while we do absolutely carry ultra high-end gear we also carry some gear that is fairly attainable. I take a tremendous amount of pride in making sure that we're positioned accurately and fairly in the marketplace and I want to make sure that we're not coming across as too "elitist" - as your post somewhat implies.
