List of essential jazz standards

Sign in to disble this ad
I finished a weeklong jazz course this week (playing trumpet) and have found me various ways to practice playing over changes.

What I'm looking for is a list of about 20-25 "essential" standards to really get me teeth into.

The kind of things that'll often get called with groups, and the kind of things that were the basis of many other tunes.

I was given a list but lost it

Major and minor blueses, rhythm changes and "all the things you are" are what come into my mind first.

Feel free to help if you can

Thanks

Well, in the circle of people that play at my location (jazzers), these come to mind:

Take Five
There Will Never Be Another You
Four
Footprints
Four on Six
Anthropology (Rhythm Changes)
Mr. PC
Blue Bossa
Black Orpheus

There's TONS of standards, and every location usually has their favorites.

Not complete at all, but:
-All of Me
-Take the "A" Train
-500 Miles High
-Freddie the Freeloader
-Black Orpheus

Pretty much anything by Basie or Ellington.

This is a nice site with a list of standards, ordered by how frequently they were recorded, along with history, analysis, etc.

That's a cool list. And it seems quite representative of tunes that get called at jazz gigs.

Also note that since the Real Book is ubiquitous, a large fraction of its tunes are "standards."
