Low rock singers

My fave - Pat Dinizio of The Smithereens - usually on the lower end of things.

Matt Barlow

Actually, the timbre of Pat's voice sometimes makes it sound lower than it actually is. I thought he sang low too, but then my cover band covered "A Girl Like You" and he actually gets pretty high. Initially, I was going to sing it but it's a challenge to hit it in my chest voice so I passed it to the guitarist. He struggles a bit, too.

For alt rock, how about the Crash Test Dummies (very low) or Peter Murphy / Bauhaus?

Milan Fras of Laibach.

Quote:
The popular German musical group Rammstein has acknowledged influence by both the aesthetic approach and some Laibach material. When members of Laibach were asked by an interviewer about Rammstein "stealing" from them, they responded that "Laibach does not believe in originality… Therefore, Rammstein could not 'steal' much from us. They simply let themselves get inspired by our work, which is absolutely a legitimate process. We are glad that they made it. In a way, they have proven once again that a good 'copy' can make more money on the market than the 'original.' Anyhow, today we share the territory: Rammstein seem to be a kind of Laibach for adolescents and Laibach are Rammstein for 'grown-ups.'"

What's the definition of "low?" Below A3, where C4 is Middle C?

In addition to those already listed:
David Bowie - actually a true bass, but has a very wide range
Calvin Johnson [Beat Happening] - makes Johnny Cash sound like Tiny Tim
Ian Curtis [Joy Division]
Jay Farrar [Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt] - basically Neil Young an octave lower
Bob Weir [Grateful Dead]
Frank Zappa
Matt Berninger [The National]
Kyp Malone [TV on the Radio] - he's doing the vocal bassline on "Ambulance," from Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes
Stephin Merritt [Magnetic Fields, five billion side projects]
Tom Smith [Editors]

Berninger probably has the richest voice of anyone mentioned on this thread. Listen to "Karen" or "City Middle" from Alligator, their 2005 disc, and you'll see what I mean. Actually, just go out and buy Alligator anyway.
