Thumbs up Live Earth coverage - been watching all day!

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about the concert series for reasons documented well elsewhere (driving to the concerts, using a lot of power for them, etc.), but I am really liking the concerts. Engergy efficiency and environmentalism is a cause close to my heart.

Anyway - the performances so far are pretty fantastic. The bass player for Duran Duran with his goregeous red four string Cirrus has the best bass tone I've heard so far. Corinne Bailey Rae's bassist with his Fender Jazz V (looked like one of the high end active basses with blocks - goregeous) is a close second. The video of the hobbyist band of researchers in Antarctica is the highlight of the day so far as far as I'm concerned. They said they played for an audience of 17 and they didn't know if that included penguins.

The educational sections are great, the green products and stuff. I like it. And they're not being heavy handed, when Dave Matthews started talking about "people who drive Hummers can maybe just drive them on Sunday" they cut him off pretty quickly.

Again, the performances are great, and the cause is noble, what's not to like. Sometimes you need to make a loud noise like this to get heard. Just to raise awareness.

Problem is I can't sign their pledge. I've been pretty much doing all that stuff for a long time. I've used CF bulbs for years, have carpooled for many years (though now I ride my moto which has been getting 49mpg lateley), recycle and reuse religiously, always turn my computer off at night, etc.

Anybody else watching?

The only band I was impressed with was the John Bulter Trio

Everything else is pretty poor in my opinion. Bloc Party weren't even that good and I like them

When celebrities give advice my eyes glaze over. Remember Barbara Striesand's helpful tips on energy saving? I'm not down on the concept by any means, but look at the messengers.

I'll pass. It's a sham.
I already use CF's where I can, and not where I can't. I drive a diesel, and combine my errands when I can.
This whole carbon footprinting thing is a horrendous joke on us. We're offshoring so much manufacturing to countries who don't give a rip about a bunch of musicians screaming and crying about the environment.
Like Daltry said, the last thing the planet needs is another Rock Concert.

And when Dave Matthews started talking about 'Maybe you can just dump your raw sewage over the side of a bridge instead of into a treatment plant.......

;-)

Yeah, but to be fair they're only giving them about 20 minutes of set time...

Tim I'm starting to like you more and more by the day

I completely agree with what you've said. This is a joke. Do you know how much power is being used by all these concerts? I was watching CNN a couple days ago, and someone they were interviewing said that all the power they will be using will create approximatley 5% more pollution then we already have. that doesn't sound that much but its enough to maybe kill a few animals.

Ihope this concert will be a flop. they didn't learn there lesson from live 8 did they?

boo urns to informative, educational, awareness concerts, boo urns.

Anyone see Spinal Tap? Oh my freaking God! They brought about twenty bassists on stage and introduced them all as "and on bass we have...."

I won't even mention the song (involves the word "fat" alot!!)

So I suppose the overall message of the Live Earth concerts is lost because of the overwhelming hypocrisy, ey?

Its a shame, really.

Although the dozens of performances use quite a bit of energy, and natural resources, it could potentially be offset by the countless watching that may change their lifestyle even the slightest to conserve. Who knows, maybe they will also vote for politicians that support environmental legislation. Would that not make up for it?

The bassist that was perfoming with CBR is Oroh Angiama
(he's also her md)and the bass he was playing was made for him by Martin Peterson and John Chapman of Sei bass fame.

It's a Sei Basses J bass model.

Just saw my old sax player, Harold Todd, up there with Lenny Kravitz! What a trip! I remember many years ago when he was just starting to get good- and I don't recall him playing trumpet either! Too cool! You go, Harold!

You mean the end justifying the means?

Apparently not. For some, nothing can make up for anything. That's just the way it is. It's also the way they want it.
