Live playing sampler type device.

My band in the past has used a sequencer type box to play samples during the beginings of songs or middle areas. But has died on us. It was more than what we needed as we just need something to play recorded sounds that are loaded ahead of time. Sort of like a glorified mp3 player. We are a basic 4 piece band, guitar, bass, drums, vocals. I have contacted music stores and they want me to drop $400 on something an ipod would do. To have buttons assigned would be nice.

Any options??

Look into the various looper pedals. Boss RC-2, RC-20XL. Digitech Jamman, Boomerang, etc.

they look complicated. We will need anywhere from 6-15 samples. With one or two lasting a minute or more.

Get a trigger pad. You can pick them up for about 200 bucks. Drummer hits it on beat and it can play a recorded loop. We use it a lot for dub reggae.
