Personally as a bassist i like to play indie/alternative sort of music along with a bit of funk but it seems no one wants to ply that music. My drummer friend likes punk, i can work with that but all the guitarists are metal heads they pump out power chords and solos that you've heard 1000 times and i just can play bass with them not because i don't have the ability but because of how they play.
Why is it that guitarists are so attracted to metal is it more fun to play just like jazz, and funky sort of stuf is more fun to play on the bass IMO.
IS IT SO MUCH TO ASK FOR A BAND THAT ONE OF THE GUITARISTS CAN LIVE WITHOUT DISTORTION? |

I also think that metal (depending on which genre) can be really fun to play.

| | | | well i hate a lot of distortion... i like really quirky effects to be added to guitars.
i'm not in a band, but i'm really into that kinda indie funk sound too. i dig reggae also. but all the local bands here are emo. no joke. or metal and emo. so i know what you're going through, it's tough finding people to play with. and then sometimes you just can't really get along with musicians you find that are into what you are. it sucks.
you just gotta keep looking though i guess. cliche and lame, right? but eventually you'll find that guitarist that isn't interesting in distortion and 12 minute solos. i hope i do! |

But I'm guessing you're thinking of more mainstream metal/rockish music. I find some of the most experimental music in metal, just not the popular stuff.
For myself, i'm a metalhead, and I don't like alot of music other than that. I didn't like music really (as in, me wanting to play it) until I heard metal. To me, funk is the same for most bass players (as metal is for guitar players), it's the sort of music that makes you want to play bass (or guitar), thus...
Personally, I don't like funk, beyond the "look how good the bass player is" part... I don't like feel good, happy music, at all.
But metal, for true metal heads, is about more than music. So if you're not apart of the culture etc...probably just isn't for you.
Yes I actually have the same/similar problem, guitar players who only want to play 2 dimensional Thrash style guitar parts, never willing to try something different where the guitar is NOT the main driving force... If they would only open their ears.

and yes, a lot of guitar players like metal because its guitar driven--distortion increases the volume, takes up a large sonic spectrum (imo) and is fast and requires dexterity and is a good platform for all those wah-induced tapping solos--what guitar player wouldn't like that?
and on top of that, why would a guitar player want to play funk? i know very few guitar players who tell me things like "you know, i just want to play a groove in E9 for 10 minutes with limited room to solo" |
