hmm i think this is right place to make a thread..so ya
well today is my birthday and suprsingly( i dint expect this at all), my parents are willing to spend above $1000 for my bdya present.
HOWEVER, i dont know what's their purpose but THEY ARENT GONNA BUY ME A NEW GUITAR (im suffering from this high action crappy squier nightmare). i wish i could get something like rick 4003 or nice fender p or j bass but they say no.
so here's the deal... they re gonna spend their money on the keyboards..i kinda prefer electric piano or rhodes piano because all of my friends can't play piano compare to me (yeah i could be cool like JPJ lol jkjk). so what electric piano should i get? i want to buy something like yamaha cp 70 or 80 (one that band pianist of Keane plays) but they(the yamah ones) are rare to buy or located to far away from where i live in ebay..
or shud i just wait till the new rhodes piano comes out?
so i would like to hear some nice suggestions from you professionals or enthusiast of keyboard. thx for reading this i rly appreciate it. im sry for posting here because i dont know any good keyboard forums.. so i m asking some mighty power of Tbers' thx again |

The good ones cost as much as a new bass though. Sometimes you can find a real Rhodes for not too much money by watching the local classifieds- people will dig them out of departed Uncle Eddie's garage or whatever and they just want the large heavy mass gone. If you do go to pick up a real Rhodes though be sure you can plug it in to test that every single key works- each key has its own mechanism and electronics, so sometimes a key or two will not work.
A side note- yr txt nglish iz hard 2 reed. Plz lurn 2 spel. |

What a ***** though, that could buy a NICE bass. Hmmm maybe have an "accident" with your squire and get a new bass, if you catch my drift. |

While there is a cool factor to having a CP80 or something like one, DON'T DO IT !!! I used to be with a group that had one and it's a nightmare. Heavy as all get out and basically only regular piano sounds. (Okay, slightly altered)
The best deal out there for sound and feel is Yamaha's Motif series. Look for one of their 88 key models used. I personally prefer the Motif ES8. It has a really crisp feel and amazing sounds, especially the pianos. They were about $3,000 new. But the ES's have been replaced by a newer version, so you might be able to find a deal on evilbay.

Definitely get a setup from a competent tech. Apparently your previous guy might not be. If it turned out that badly before, either your tech sucks or you bass is basically ruined. A good tech can make a mediocre bass into an awesome tool. A bad tech can make a great bass into an endurance test.
As to the CP 80, the reason I have an opinion at all is that in my first really serious(Read that as paid.) gig, I toured with a guy who had one. (This was about 1981.) My first paying gig was the only group I've worked with that had a tourbus. The keyboardist had what was then considered 'a full touring keyboard rig': a Yamaha Electric Grand Piano(the CP 80), a Rhodes eigty eight, and a Hammond B3 with a leslie.
I eventually figured out they hadn't hired me for my awesome bass skills, but for my strong back. And I couldn't even curse while pulling the heavy equpment...it was a Gospel group.

hmm my real intention was doing things like piano at the bottom and a synth on the top of piano (like tim oxley in Keane). thats why i wantd cp 80 but after you told me cp 80 is just mediocre... i changed my mind to something else like new rhodes (coming out on feb i hope) or motif. well this whole thing, getting a piano, is just for entertainment. imean im not trying to make my living out of it(unfortunately, i cant be a musician.. my parents have a quite great expectation for me) o well i hope everything will go well |

What did I get last year? A torque wrench and a bag of socks.

For its day the CP 70/80's were seriously hot stuff. The problem is that that day was twenty-five or thirty years ago. There is a direct descendent of the CP 80 called the CP 300. They can be had new for about $2,200 new, and are pretty awesome. A similarly awesome, but unfortunately similarly expensive synth is the S90 ES. It has the same sound engine as the Motif ES for about $2,200 new.
With basses it's pretty cool to have a nice vintage piece. But with keyboards, vintage mostly just means old, and primitive.
I generally prefer the feel of Yamaha piano actions, so for strictly the feel of the key action, the CP 300 is my favorite keyboard, but it is limited to fairly traditional digital piano sounds.
I prefer the sounds from the Motif. If you could find a good deal on a used S90 ES, then that is probably your best possible bet.

hmm ok bard sorry for my misunderstanding. hmm so should i go for yamaha s90 es or motif synth/workstation? i think motif looks cooler but s90 is cheaper.. hmm i cant decide lol |

| | <-- That guy looks like me, but old. | | Join Date: Aug 2002 Location: Arlington TX | | | There are a couple of different S90's. The ES model has the same sound engine as the Motif ES. It can't do everything the Motif can do, but it can generally be had for about a third less money.
The other S90's are good keyboards, too. I just prefer the sounds on the ES version.
I almost bought a S08. Which is about half the cost of the S90. You could get a new one for around $1,000. But it really didn't sound as amazing as I wanted. It's got a lot of really good sounds. But the GC people put it right between synths that I either wouldn't try at all because it was a soft action 61 key synth(the S03), or would totally dig more than the S08 (the S90 ES).
Several of the Korg's and Rolands are nice, too. And if you find a good one, so are the Alesis, but if you go Alesis, look for an older model QS8 or QS8.1. After they went to the QS8.2 I think the changes were made by the marketing department in stead of by engineers.
I have the Alesis QS8.1. I got it on ebay for $500. But if I had had more money, I totally would have gotten the Yamaha.
