looking for hot sax. (saxophone query)

I recently have decided that i am going to attempt to use a saxophone in my music. So i'm going to have to at least get some decent chops with one of the 4 most common sax's. but which one?!?!?!? it's driving me insane! here's where i'm coming from/why i chose sax:

-i have a real fondness for fusion-jazz, and on top of that, i already have a Rhodes and a Moog....so it seems logical that a sax would fit in this freaky funky mix quite well.

-i've been moving more and more away from electronic music to more organic rhythms and this would fit the bill nicely.

beyond deciding i'd like to use a sax in my setup, I DON'T KNOW WHICH ONE! John Zorn and ornette coleman have taught me that Altos can be outright NASTY on top of sweet, and Coltrane has shown me that Tenors can be more smooth and mellow. But at the same time, I do enjoy the punchiness and ballsiness of a good baritone sound. I can't have all of these qualities in one sax, can i?

Having said all that, i do know that i DON'T want to invest time into a soprano sax. that particular sax is a little too...light and etheral for me. in fact, i'll just say what's on everybodies mind--Kenny Gorelick Ruined that sax for everybody.

SOMEBODY HELP ME DECIDE!

You need look no further than the real Kenny G - Garrett - to squelch any concerns about the other guy. Branford Marsalis' playing on soprano will also knock you out. And don't forget Coltrane. Paraphrasing Miles: I hate the soprano saxophone. It's an ugly sounding instrument. But when Coltrane plays it it's okay.

Personally, I always lean toward tenor sax. Huge range, punch, sweetness, etc. Give a listen to Brecker...or Branford...or Garrett...or hundreds of other cats to see if that type of sound works for you.

I played them all for years, but it was always all about the Tenor...that growly powerful tone!

I like the sound of Tenor saxes the most. Baritones are cool too but I think they might be less versatile. Altos sound mostly too smooth to me but OTOH I enjoy the sound Cannonball Adderley got out of his alto. Sopranos are nice but perhaps not the best for funk.

For funk, I'd go with a tenor.
