Looking For Some Sort Of MIDI-Controllable Drum Module

Sign in to disble this ad
Most of the drum modules I've seen use a bunch of trigger inputs to generate sound. I'm looking for something that will output individual drum/percussion sounds using just MIDI PCs or CCs to trigger them. I don't want to trigger sequences- just single drum sounds that can each be assigned a different PC or CC. Are there any non-PC units that operate this way? I'm hoping there's some sort of half-rack or rackmount unit that will work.

I assume the Octapad works like my Roland Handsonic, where you can use MIDI to trigger sequences, but not individual drum sounds (as the pads are basically triggers).

I'm not sure what you're looking for then. Are you looking for the trigger, or the thing that generates the sound?

I'm looking (although it likely doesn't exist) for a sound module that needs no 1/4" triggers, just MIDI input to start drum sound samples.

don't a lot of drum machines have MIDI in and no trigger inputs?

The Alesis drum machines have MIDI ports.

I think you can control pretty much any drum machine or eDrum module by MIDI (whether there are pads connected or not). The kits are generally mapped to individual notes and if you play a MIDI sequence into it it should work. You just need a sequencer (computer + sw or stand-alone hw) to control it.

Maybe I am confused about what you are asking.

I looked at the Alesis SR-18 and it appears it can be controlled with MIDI note on messages (which my controller can send).

Pretty much what you're saying minus the sequencer aspect. I just want to trigger individual drum sounds on the spot with a with a MIDI foot controller.
