Looking for suggestions of jazz groups

Sign in to disble this ad
Since I started playing bass, my taste for music has changed from punkrock to funkrock to ska and now I'm getting into jazz. However, I don't know many jazz artists yet and I would like some suggestions from you guys. I'm currently listening to some Weather Report and some of Jaco's stuff I've found. I also have one song of the James Taylor Quartet on my computer (I don't know how it got there, but I like it :P).

What groups that are somewhat like the above three would you recommend? Also, I'm extra interested in groups with good bassists (off course).

Based on what you said this is my recommendation:

Check out some of Billy Cobham's stuff as well as Mahavishnu Orchestra. For Cobham start with Spectrum or Live: Flight Time. For Mahavishnu start with "The Inner Mounting Flame" and follow up with "Birds of Fire."

You might also want to check out some Medeski Martin and Wood. I'd check out Combustication first.

Sounds like you might dig some of John Scofield's stuff. He always has good basists and very interesting melodic basslines on his records.

He has a broad range of recordings though and some of them are out there. The hardcore fusion stuff would be Still Warm, Blue Matter, and Loud Jazz. Some of his more urban funky stuff would be Bump, A Go-Go, and Up All Night.

I like Sco
