Does anyone like playing music they don't listen to? I love playing old school sountry and bluegrass but I can't stand to listen to it. Is anyone else like that about something?

Not me. If I can't stand to listen to it, I have no interest in playing it. Fortunately, I like everything except rap and hip hop.

I can see that - I get giddy about challenging bass lines - and fun band songs. To the point I could care less about the tune as a whole . . .

I started with playing some funk tunes while only listening to technical/brutal death metal.

I ended up not listening to metal for the last 3 years. :P

Everything I play I don't listen to. I can't understand how people have listened to Lynard Skynard for 30 years and continue to play it every weekend. I'd go insane with boredom. There is good music evesrywhere and I don't want to be strapped to only listening to a little bit.

I only play genre's to which I listen. I doubt I would play others - unless you count subbing. I have played with cover bands that are "more metal" or "harder" than mine. That's about as far as it goes for me.

Well I'm in a rock band, but I pretty much never listen to rock anymore.

Same here .. although I do listen to ambient/post rock sometime, but very rarely. Mostly I just listen to Tool and NIN

Honestly, it's sometimes nice to get away from worrying about extensions, walking bass lines, slap bass and chordal lines and just laying down a constant 8th note punk or powerpop line. I've filled in for quite a few gigs like that and they're always fun to play. However, I couldn't listen to the actively. I get bored every time I try.

I've never been able to appreciate all the 60-70s funk/motown music but I sure love to play (well try to play)some Jamerson basslines!

i play in a post-hardcore/metalcore band, and the majority of that genre is trite and awful.
