Fri and Sat gigs at a casino next state over. Arrive home a bit after 3:00 a.m. and discover bass is missing. I instantly realize that it was left on curb in back of casino (I don't drink till after gigs, and we had to play past last call, so no excuses there). Hop into the batmobile (okay, the mr2) and drive the 40-50 miles at light speed. Talk to flunkies who radio someone who radios someone else, and after tense minutes the security guy show up and lets me know it's my lucky day. He takes me back into the bowels of lost and found. Tells me he took it out and played it and put his name on it in case it wasn't claimed within 30 days. Asks me if I want to open the case to make sure everything's intact. I laugh and offer him a few twenties for his honesty and help. He declines.
The whole drive over there, I'm contemplating that the odds are pretty good that I've just lost my main bass. I don't really have a gigworthy bass as a backup right now, and I've got a really big show next Sat., opening for ZZ Top and Hank Williams, Jr. (are you readdddy for some ffoooooootballl?!?) and I am wondering what the heck I'm gonna do.
I got home (for the second time) and as I finish this post it's almost 6 a.m... Took me awhile to take the bass out and make sure it was in good shape, mix a martini, spill part of it into my keyboard, soak it up by running a paper towel between the keys, and then finally make this post.
It is my lucky day!!!! I told the guy at the casino that I ought to go out on the floor and see how far my luck would go, but alas, I'm not the gambling sort.

The box was trashed, the pedals were not!

If it had gotten snatched, at least I'd have the consolation of having another one on the way... though I'm having trouble getting a good answer on when the new one (custom) will be finished. Not in time for next weekend's gigs, I'm pretty sure!
The guy at lost and found said he was going to give it to his nephew if it went unclaimed. I got a flash mental image of some kid trying to make his free bass look 'cool' with spray paint and stickers. Whew!

One of my bandmates plunked down $50 in the casino before we started playing and walked away with $500. I'm not sure which one of us was luckier that night... I had no net gain, of course, but stood to lose much more!!!

It's not for everyone but if you're carting your gear all over the place, you should at least look into it. It takes away some of the pain out of such unfortunate incidents. And it's not as expensive as I expected it to be.

| | The emperor has no clothes! | | Join Date: Aug 2003 Location: Burbank CA USA | | Great story! Wow, that's almost as good as winning the lottery. Once I bought a used Alembic Series II, and put it in the back of the truck to take it home. On the way home, I hit a bump and the case somehow bypassed the fishnet and ended up on the road. When I finally got to it, I discovered it had opened up, and the bass was in one place and the case was in another. Apparently the bass must have come down right on the omega cut, 'cause one of the points was broken. But I think that hard shell case saved my butt that day (or at least my bass's butt), 'cause that was the only damage. I still have that bass, it's my favorite studio instrument. I ended up taking it over to Dan Carruthers for repair. He's one of the few people I'd trust to do that kind of thing. Anyway, I'm glad you got your bass back, and I hope you guys do a killer show and have lots of fun.

| | | oh man donk! I have quite the story for you.
About a month ago, I was packing up my stuff in preparation for the flight home from boston.
I had purchased a great MTD kingston 4 string fretless from Tb'ist steve-o earlier in the year and I was planning on shipping it home(along with another heavy box)
So, Me and my buddy hauled the heavy box the 3 blocks away from our apartment to the FedEx shipping center, we arrived, I went back to get the bass as my friend filled out the paperwork.
I bring the bass in(all packed up nicely in it's shipping box), fill out my part of the paper work(since we had decided to ship it to my place in the end)
We pay, they take our items, all is well. the next day:
The next day me and my roommate went out during the day to get lunch, we took an exceptionally long time, because we wanted to enjoy our last lunch in boston, Upon returning to the apartment there is a note on our door that says (paraphrased) "failed delivery, will try again tomorrow at 3"
panic.
The 'failed delivery' was my bass, apparently, they tried to ship it to my apartment from the shipping center 3 blocks away. There must have been an old shipping tag from when Steve-O shipped it to me, causing the shipping guy to bring it to the apartment in boston and not the plane.
So, I'm stressin out, like "****, I'm not going to be here tomorrow, the shipping center is closed already, what am I going to do?!?"
then our door-bell rings...
"hello, is kief there?"
I go down to meet him.
at the door is a guy in his mid 40s, he tells me that he found my bass in the middle of the street, cars had been swerving to avoid hitting it!!!
gah!
so, he had an appointment to goto, but he said that my bass was at his apartment, and that he'd come back in about 30 minutes to take me over there.
30 minutes or so later, he rings, I go down, over to his apartment, and pick up my bass.
It's okay!
the case was a little damaged, but the bass was in perfect health. phew!
lucky lucky lucky lucky me
