I may be getting a macbook soon and was wondering if I would be able to directly connect my bass into the laptop and to be able to get good sound quality. Is it possible? How?

Jack -> Mini Jack lead into the audio in socket.

It's OK. Obviouly there's a reason studio's spend big cash on pro-audio interfaces, but "good quality" is always dependent on you budget.

SO I just use a 1/4 to 1/8 adaptor?

i go through my amp, from there I take the DI out through a smal behringer console and then to the audio in of my macbook.

Doesn't sound great, but it sound good enough to record my pratice and have some fun.

I must admit I never took the time to get a better sound from my gear.
With some EQ on the amp I guess I could get a better sound.

@ Guitar Center, I got a cord with a 1/4 inch guitar plug on one end and a usb connector on the other that connects directly into the computer/laptop. Sound quality is what your bass makes it. It's a direct feed.

i just bought a 1/4th to 1/8th adapter from radioshack for like 3 bucks.. it works fine. you just plug the end of your instrument cable to the 1/4th side and the 1/8th side plugs into your macbook, very simple.

I got a M-Audio MobilePre USB audio interface. It has two channels with 1/4" and XLR inputs on both. It has the ability to plug in a bass and mic at the same time to record. You can even adjust it so that when applying effects (in Garageband) there is no delay in sound (kinda like an analog stomp box). It works great with my aluminum Imac.
