If you WERE to try and create a list of the seven "greatest ever", that would be more controversial. For example, would The Doors be an automatic and uncontroversial choice over, say, Bob Dylan, without any debate? I guess not.
But some of the artists mentioned in the OP would almost certainly have to go in such a list, regardless of personal preference. You just couldn't make a sensible case for any seven bands without including the one electracoyote deliberately left unnamed in post #3, for example.

1. Chuck Berry
2. Little Richard
3. Buddy Hollie
4. Beatles
5. Stones
6. Cream
7. Jimi Hendrix
8. Led Zeppelin
9. Black Sabbath
10. Deep Purple
11. Pink Floyd
12. Yes
13. King Crimson
14. The Doors
15. Dylan
These are all bands/artists that spawned countless imitators, and in some cases, gave birth to a style of music.
I tried to do 10, but I soon ended up with 15. You could make a case that there can't be less than 20, 25, or 50. After that, your case starts to get weaker.
I could go on with some bands that were pretty phenomenal, and certainly had their own style, while influencing others, and selling a few records:
16. Queen
17. Van Halen
18. Rush
19. Aerosmith (yes, Aerosmith)
20. Allman Brothers
And I could easily expand the list well beyond that.
Feel free to do so.

I'd have to squeeze the Dead on there too.

15. Dylan | Interesting that you would rate Chuck Berry, Little Richard & Buddy Holly as Number 1, Number 2, & Number 3 respectively - yet not so much as give even an honorable mention to the one glaringly obvious omission from among their contemporaries...Elvis Presley!

The list including them had 15 bands in it. Can you think of 15 bands that should all uncontroversially be in there to force Sabbath out?
I'm not a huge fan of the band myself, but please, try to put your point of view without belittling the opinions of other folks.

They're the only band I know of that their deepest cuts are as recognizable by the vast majority of people as their hits are. Just about every band out there lists The Beatles as one of their influences.

MM | That was a total flub on my part.
Oops!

They are probably the most influential band when it comes to modern metal. They had brilliant songwriting, and for guys without a ton of skill, they really pushed the boundaries when it came to style and rhythm. Their jams were so adventurous; their concept so focused; their ideas so innovative.
Out of everyone on the list, they own a genre pretty handily.
Plus, I've seen live videos of them from back in the day, and I thought they were excellent. They had some off days, especially in the mid seventies until when they let Ozzy go, where there was too much rock star excess, and they really were playing badly, but out of the gate they were awesome, and in later incarnations as well. They also had great albums.
I feel strongly that they cannot be overlooked.
And yeah, I don't really listen to them that often. That's not really the style of music I most like.

One band - Led Zeppelin
Three bands - above & the Beatles, Yes
Five bands - above & Pink Floyd, Primus

The other six - okay, I can let any of those pass. But not the Doors. Probably Dylan instead. And I don't even like listening to Dylan.
Or maybe Elvis.
7 GREATEST ROCK AND ROLL BANDS OR ARTISTS?
Beatles
Elvis
The Who
Rolling Stones
Led Zep
Jimi Hendrix
Pink Floyd
I dunno. I'm not sure any of the other mentions in this thread (such as Chuck Berry, Cream, Dylan - or Vanilla Fudge) could really obviously push any of those seven out.

Motown was more about the overall genre rather than individual artists, but I don't think you can rule it out just for that reason.
This has been an interesting thread, regardless of the origins of the title. It's always fascinating to look back at our musical heritage and think about how where we've been has led us to where we are.

Would be really hard to pick any single Motown act and exclude others, though. How about we just say "Any Motown artist who had a hit with Jamerson on it"? That would pretty much nail it, really.
