Mahavishnu

As a lover Jazz and of Djent metal. I recently discovered The Mahavishnu Orchestra and I am blown away to be honest. I am not shocked that the fusion movement of the 70s was this good, but that it is so obscure. Maybe not? But it seems like great technical music gets overlooked. Maybe Djent in 40 years will be something people will stumble on like I did this?

I am extremely happy I discovered this for myself. Its timeless and is so up my alley. Had to create a thread about it.

1) Wrong forum.

2) Visions of the Emerald Beyond is one of the best things I've ever heard.

Sorry this is the wrong forum.

Ive started with Inner Mounting Flame and am working my way up. I found the group through Ralphe Armstrongs credits on the Motown documentary. Oddly enough. I thought I would check out what he did and WOW. I never expected it!

interesting side note to Inner Mounting Flame...

supposedly the bass player and the violin player got into a fistfight during the recording of the song "Noonward Race" and the rest of the band just kept on playing. they crashed into the keyboardist (Jan Hammer if any of you know who he is) and John McLaughlin liked the track so much, he kept that in there.

i say my three favorite 70's fusion bands are

Mahavishnu Orchestra

Weather Report &

Return to Forever.

if listening to those doesn't make you a fan...well, i guess fusion music is just not your thing...

And, he is in the current lineup of Return To Forever. Quite a talent. Plus, he had a stint with Frank Zappa.

And then there's King Crimson. Prog, not fusion, but they should be in this recommended listening list.

absolutely love them...have 5 or 6 of their albums on ITUNES right now.

ps-edit...Robert Fripp is the finest electric guitarist that few people have heard of or know by name...he is truly excellent

I always really liked Jeff Beck's stuff from then, specifically 'Blow By Blow', 'There and Back' and 'Wired'.

different people have different ideas of the "greatest" guitarist of all time and really, there is no wrong answer...it's just who you, as an individual, find to be your own personal greatest.

for mine, i'll say john McLaughlin is truly the greatest...followed closely by Jeff Beck, Al DiMeola, Robert Fripp...

as far as the greatest fusion album of all time...i dig every one that has been mentioned in this post....they are all fantastic.

ps-edit- Just listened to "Blow by Blow" today, as a matter of fact

Him and Ralphe Armstrong were in Mahavishnu together. Armstrong became Jean Luc's bassist at one point when he had his own group.

I'll add BrandX to that list if you haven't heard them. Percy is a cool guy and an amazing bass player.

There are some live shows out there that show the incredible awesomeness of Rick Laird. The studio albums dont really show what he can do. He was a wise man, and stayed out of the many diva's ways.

His old book on how to play jazz is great.

I would object: to me that would be Fred Frith...
