As a lover Jazz and of Djent metal. I recently discovered The Mahavishnu Orchestra and I am blown away to be honest. I am not shocked that the fusion movement of the 70s was this good, but that it is so obscure. Maybe not? But it seems like great technical music gets overlooked. Maybe Djent in 40 years will be something people will stumble on like I did this?
I am extremely happy I discovered this for myself. Its timeless and is so up my alley. Had to create a thread about it.

Ive started with Inner Mounting Flame and am working my way up. I found the group through Ralphe Armstrongs credits on the Motown documentary. Oddly enough. I thought I would check out what he did and WOW. I never expected it!

supposedly the bass player and the violin player got into a fistfight during the recording of the song "Noonward Race" and the rest of the band just kept on playing. they crashed into the keyboardist (Jan Hammer if any of you know who he is) and John McLaughlin liked the track so much, he kept that in there.

absolutely love them...have 5 or 6 of their albums on ITUNES right now.
ps-edit...Robert Fripp is the finest electric guitarist that few people have heard of or know by name...he is truly excellent

for mine, i'll say john McLaughlin is truly the greatest...followed closely by Jeff Beck, Al DiMeola, Robert Fripp...
as far as the greatest fusion album of all time...i dig every one that has been mentioned in this post....they are all fantastic.

His old book on how to play jazz is great.
