Mandolin players?

Is it an easy transition? Do you tune GDAE? Can you flip the tuning so it's like a 4-string only two or three (whatever) octaves higher?

That would be like tuning a bass GDAE. Could you? Yes. But it would probably require a different string set and set-up.

I don't play Mandolin. But I imagine with the small low tension strings, changing tunings would be even harder than on a bass.
