Manhasset Music Stand Question

Sign in to disble this ad
It is possible to adjust the clutch mechanism on these if there is one? My chartbook binder is getting heavy enough that the stand doesn't support it anymore. Sounds like I may have to get a different brand stand. . .

I have the same problem...

Anyone?

Thanks for any replies. Checked their web site a while back and couldn't find the answer. Seems like the stands have different resistances from the factory - well, mine is about 20 years old and a new one has more resistance, but, mine just might be a bit worn.

Just found this in the FAQ section of their website:

Q. IS THERE SOMETHING I CAN DO TO INCREASE THE WEIGHT CARRYING CAPACITY OF MY STAND?

A. The stand’s shaft friction device is designed to support about 9 lbs. If your stand does not support that much weight, how old is the stand? You need to know that we have a five-year warranty. If your stand is five years or newer, we will replace your shaft – no questions asked.

If your stand is older, rather than purchasing a new shaft (which is certainly an option), or if you want to support more than the design weight, we also have a "Shaft-Lock" product that could solve your problem. It allows you to adjust the height, and in the locked position, it will support far above the weight that the shaft itself is designed to do. It may be something you want to consider. You can view this product on our website in the New Product page.

Hmmm, earlier in the FAQ it said their stand warranties are ten years. Gotta dig out the receipt from mine. . .

I just looked at Manhasset's site; check their catalog for item #2400. It's a lock to allow the stand to old up to 75#. That should work!

Having just looked at my Manhasset-the height is low chair to a very high chair-adjustable. The separate nut/bolt arrangement is very strong, and allows an extreme 'tray' angle way over 90 degrees from vertical-then backwards through horizontal.

Saw that too, but I'm going to see if I can get a new stand out of this!

Been there. I used to work with a bandleader who had a staggering chartbook. I kept a cheap stainless steel hose clamp in my gig bag. Home Depot or a car parts store.

The bandleader always called the same few dozen tunes from his book at every gig. Eventually I memorized the tunes.

My old bandleader used duct tape, looking for something a little "classier".

Major Update/Alert

Okay, here's the way to go:

Call MF and have them price match Amazon's product which is currently $4.48. You will get the shaft-lock for $4.13 with free shipping! Much cheaper and easier solution than sending the stand back for replacement.

I had to laugh at this. Darn near every Manhasset stand I've seen has the name of some school on it.

To answer the OP.... This is a problem with Manhasset stands. I play in a big band with a very large book and those who use the Manhassets have radiator clamps or vise grips. Nothing very elegant. My suggestion is to get a stand with a set screw that will hold the weight of the book.

With one particular bandleader, I am tempted to tell him that I can't read, thus eliminating the need to bring a stand altogether.

I'm a clamp & clip fan for holding things down. If you've had a breeze around your stand during an outside gig, you know!

You can go heavy duty (super stout compared to a chip clip) or more like a clothes pin variety. I've got those in plastic, and metal with a large magnet on one side.
