Rudy's @ 48th St.

Warwick Custom Shop in SoHo, call to make an appt.

Matt Umanov's Guitars off of Bleeker

30th Street Guitars on 30th St.

If you're willing to venture out of Manhattan:

Sadowsky in Astoria

Fodera and Carl Thompson in BK.

Thanks. I've got a few hours today downtown so I will hit Rudy's and then Umanov as well.

Great list!
I would add Sam Ash on 48th street too. Now that they have taken over the space that used to be Manny's, they have a pretty big bass department with a bunch of used basses plus Sadowsky's and Custom Shop Fenders you can try out. There's a guy named Patrick who was very helpful to me there and I didn't even buy anything.

+1

Also, Larry Hartke works in the Bass room at Sam Ash a few days a week. He is a great guy and it is worth it to visit, play his basses on display, and hear some of his stories.

I didn't list Sam Ash because the last few times I've been there the service has been downright awful, it's taken a least twenty minutes for an employee to even notice you're in the bass department attempting to make a purchase and if you try and ask someone to come in and help you. Well..
The instruments also aren't setup with any regularity like the basses at the aforementioned shops, the lone bright spot in the store is Larry; the guy's a sweetheart and he'll let you play ANYTHING (when he's there.)
