That's where I bought lots of my equipment over the years.

I was just down on 34th Street between 8th & 9th Avenues this morning and walked by a huge storefront filled with signs proclaiming "Sam Ash Super Store, coming in 2013".

So I Googled "Sam Ash 34th Street" and found this link...from last July!

Note the part about "The [building] on the north side of the street, which has a garage, is going to be torn down and there is going to be a condo going up”

End of an era.

I used to work only a half-block away from Manny's for a year in the late 80's, and bought my first proper bass there, a Bass Collection SB401. Nice P/J sound on that one, and it played better than any other bass I have owned before or since. Was a jazz fusion machine for a couple of years I owned it before selling to a friend (think he still has it) and finally switching to a true lefty instrument.

I still have a "Manny's Music" guitar strap.

Manny's had the image, but here's a quick story from the 1970s: Friend went into Manny's and asked for a Gibson Dove. Well, they didn't have one in stock, but they could get one in a week. Friend drove up to Boston, walked into the old E.U. Wurlitzer store on Newbury Street, asked for a Gibson Dove. Sales guy looked at him and asked "Which finish do you want? Spruce or ebony?"

Glad I had a chance to go there last year when I had the chance. Cool place, sad to see them pull out of there.

I just walked over to 48th St today on my lunch break to buy a strap. I hadn't heard about the imminent Sam Ash move. Well, they're packing up now - the "store" (or stores, on both sides of the street, including the old Manny's) is closed this week and is reopening on 34th between 8th and 9th (a horrible location) next week. The only store left on 48th St. is Rudy's. The end of an era for sure.

Stopped by a couple summers ago & it was cool for sure. That whole area is cool as hell... Less cool now.
