Sign in to disble this ad
Im curious on what some people's thoughs are about marijuana and music... Does it hurt does it help... What has been your experience?

Please do not comment unless you have direct experience thank you..

From my own situation it seems to increase feel and all music sounds good but after hearing myself recorded and sober it doesnt seem all that great.. and maybe even hurt me as far as trying to learn the neck goes because of memory difficulties..

I don't do it.

Most people i play with do however. It's effect is pretty person to person. I know some who are better musicians all stoned to the bone, and some that are terrible.

I know that the more any bands I saw doing it indulged, the more they just hung around talking about how awesome they were going to be, rather than actually making music.

Oh yeah, IBTL.

it feels and sounds good BECAUSE you are high... hearing it back while straight proves the point the experience you had while high was simply a case of the music version of 'beer muscles'.

I have no regrets about my past and the things I've done... but I have to say, the music is played and experienced in far more vivid and intimate ways by an unaltered opened mind.

Marijuana used to make Duran Duran sound like the Beatles to me. If that ain't enough reason to stay away from it, I dunno what is!

Yup. It's a euphoric. Everything's awesome until ya sober up.

Because of the short term memory problems you mention, among many others that can be caused by the drug, I can't recommend heavy use. Having been a heavy user, however, I've had a myriad of experiences re music and marijuana. I too have had the experience where you think you're a musical genius, but you sober up and realise you've just recorded yourself pointlessly noodling around the fretboard for 15 minutes but I also got very high marks for electronic compositions I did on a music course at college way back when that I did while mostly high. Yeah, high in college. I thought I was so cool. I was such a douche. I've been playing while high and totally lost any semblance of control of my instrument, but I've also had some of the best jam sessions of my life and come up with some really good material as a result. It's literally pot luck how it'll turn out.

I genuinely hope this thread doesn't devolve into tired pro and anti cannabis cliches, and stays to the OP re it's relationship with music, however, remember kids - winners don't do drugs!

We grok you, man.

Seriously, get high, play something "heavy" but also record it. The listen to it when you are sober. You can answer your own question.

I think playing with regular users counts as direct experience. I sort of agree that it's a person-to-person thing; depends on the individual as well as how much they smoke. In general, though, I found those who frequently indulged were able to come up with some interesting bits, but didn't have the greatest attention spans when it came time to tighten up the material. Might work better in a jam-band scenario than the shorter songs I tend to favor.

Over the years I smoked a lot of weed. I also played a lot of bass. I can't do both at the same time. The herb makes me stupid when it comes to music.

These days I play a lot of bass, but I really don't smoke dope anymore. It was a fair trade.

I do some of my writing with it, perform completely without it. Seems to work best for me, sometimes you find you write something more interesting when you've had a few smokes, though I never have the attention span to do anything when totally baked. A few "sober" writing sessions help to find any random fluff that your barely functioning brain has decided to throw into the mix.....like the 4 hour percussive bass solo that sounded great to you beforehand :P

I find my production is much better after a few spliffs as well, I think I listen to the music in more detail, occasionally to my detriment when I get lost on tiny details, so again, a sober session at the end works best. I've tried many times to do production without smoking anything, always ends up sounding worse when I get to the end product.
