Mark Rizzo of Soulfly is one bad dude.

My band got to open for Mark Rizzo's band last night. This guy is awesome. I'm sure he's a bit too much for most people taste, but the guy is just so undeniably talented.

Last night he played a mix of his originals, Soulfly and I believe one Sepultura song. I loved his original work. It would probably be considered prog...but he used a lot of salsa beats and mixed it up a lot. During the whole set I found myself going from headbanging and trying to stay out of the mosh pits to wanting to dance.

I've never listened to too much Soulfly...so I didn't have a great idea of what to expect, especially being his solo work. I really enjoyed the show. NOTHING like what I was told to expect.

His bassist was Gene...something. He was running Fender Jazz 5(dunno what kind) into a GK head to Trace 4x10. Good player with some good lines. He and the drummer gave Rizzo a great platform to work from. They had their own time to shine as well.

Most importantly! I got to talk to all of them after the show and they were really cool guys. I got to talk to Mark the longest(though not too long, I had to leave so I could make it into work today) and he was very personable and thankful. I told him how I was really digging the prog/latin tunes and he seemed to dig that.

I highly recommend checking him out. If he makes it through town again in any form, I'll be there.

Got to listen to the CD I bought last night. I was just hanging out with some friends and put it on in the background. Now, I'm wishing I had bought his other CD too. I only had enough cash on me for one though. The CD probably played through 4 times over the course of the evening. The flow is excellent.

I highly recommend checking the CD and more importantly the band out if you have chance.

you know the guy played in Ill Nino. He got a lot better when he left the band.
