Driving in to work today I put a CD in the radio, something that I do every day. I put in Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsys. I was unable to leave the car until the last song was played. Of course this made me late for work. I couldnt help from thinking that this album is a work of art. Machine Gun should be played often, and at high volume. What is that one album for you TB that you cant turn off until the last song is played. What is that perfect album? (for all you young cats, I know they are called CD's. They will always be albums to me)

To quote Frank Zappa, "What is your conceptual continuity?"

Conceptual albums are not nearly as common today as they used to be.

I would not call it a "perfect" album ( they are albums to me also ), but Miles' "Bitches Brew" has the effect on me that you describe.

There are so many to choose from, but my nomination would be Argus by Wishbone Ash.

Regardless of the medium...they're all albums.

Anyway, just picked up the just issued Legacy version of Bitches Brew...includes a nice DVD performance of Miles, Shorter, Dejohnette, Corea & Holland in Copenhagen 1969.

Agreed, and now more than ever. The last time I cranked that in my car it made me cry. There is a lot of pain in that recording. Tortured playing.

Sorry to derail...

In the age of shuffle, I can say that whenever I hear a single track off any of the following albums, I feel the need to listen to the whole thing.

The Blood Brothers - ...Burn, Piano Island, Burn
The Doors - Self-Titled
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing...
Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters
Descendents - Milo Goes to College
Filter - Short Bus
Frank Zappa - Apostrophe, Overnight Sensation, Roxy and Elsewhere, Freak Out, Absolutely Free, Weasels Ripped My Flesh
Jeff Buckley - Grace
The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium
Morphine - The Night
NIN - Broken
The Offspring - Ignition
A Perfect Circle - The Thirteenth Step
The Phunk Junkeez - Injected
The Pimps - To a Cool Person, Stay That Way
Prodigy - Music for the Jilted Generation
Radiohead - OK Computer
Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire
Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed
Rollins Band - Nice
Sage Francis - Personal Journals
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Stabbing Westward - Wither, Blister, Burn and Peel
Stevie Wonder - Fulfillingness' First Finale
System of a Down - Self Titled
Toad the Wet Sprocket - Coil
The Toadies - Rubberneck
Tool - Aenima
The Who - Quadrophenia

Its a very hard question but if i had to choose it'd be one the following.

Led Zeppelin III
Fragile by YES
OK Computer by Radiohead
Stand Up by Jethro Tull
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not by Arctic Monkeys
[u]Animals[u] by Pink Floyd
and
Flight of the Conchords by Flight of the Conchords

I couldn't choose.

Even to us young cats, they're still albums. Thats the difference, and Album is a single piece of work that makes sense together (and sometimes only makes sense together), whereas a CD is just a medium for a collection of music, an LP or EP, depending on length. As for my picks, there's certain albums I can really ONLY listen to in album form, front to back, all at once, the way it was intended. Although there may be one or two songs that can be picked out on their own, they just make me want to listen to the whole thing, especially when it's the first track... But I digress. Most of Pink Floyd's catalogue falls in to this category, although the standouts are The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon. Tool's 10,000 Days fits as well, along with Jethro Tull's Aqualung. They just work better in context.
