Mastodooooon

So I went to see Mastodon here in Lexington last Saturday (anyone else here at that show?) They were awesome- I was right up front, and my face just about came off. Baroness opening was awesome enough, and worth the $25, but Mastodon was just incredible. They're one of my favorite groups, and I was very happy to see them live. They played the entirety of Crack the Skye, and then a bunch of other songs.
The best part? I got to meet 3/4ths of the band after the show, and got my picture taken with them.

I'm the one in the blue Tom Waits shirt.

First, we got to meet one of my favorite drummers ever. He was really cool and friendly, but was pretty tired. Being Mastodon's drummer probably wears you out.

And if that wasn't enough, out came Troy, one of the best metal bass players to ever play. He was also friendly, he gladly went along with autographs and photos. (my friend, the one holding the drumstick, caught one of Brann's drumsticks, so she got it autographed)

And then... out came Bill. He was a little under the influence of alcohol- he was talking in a fake Southern accent half the time. He also hit on my friend, whose boyfriend was right there. But I guess it comes with the territory of meeting a guitarist in a metal band. I feel sorry for him now, being in the hospital. He's an awesome guitarist, and has an awesome handlebar moustache.

Brent didn't come out- I think we missed him inside or something. I wanted to meet him, but oh well, I'm sure there will be another time.
Overall? Awesome show.

(also my eyes are red in every single picture, dangit)

Oh yea, Troy said my Tom Waits shirt was awesome. I get a lot of comments on it, but that was probably the best one.
He is not as scary as he looks.

I live in Georgetown, work in Lexington.
By chance, did you figure out what was going on with Brent? He was offstage for a minute, yelling at somebody or something. I think he had issues with his monitor.
Otherwise, they sounded great, and seemed into it.

edit: seriously? that's awesome. He's my best friend. All the people in that picture (sans Mastodon members) have been involved with me musically in one way or another.

Nice man.

When i saw them in toronto, a friend of mine got kicked in the face in the pit; blood was everywhere, so he went to the bar. While at the bar, while dethklok played (after mastodon's set), one of mastodon's roadie's asked him if he wanted to come backstage and hangout with mastodon.... he proceeded to drink and be merry with four of the best metal musicians of the time period.

lucky ****er.

They played some stuff from Remission after they played all of Crack the Skye. When they started playing March of the Fire Ants everyone went nuts.
They ended with Blood and Thunder... talk about ending with a bang.

Mastodon is INCREDIBLE live... I saw them back in November with Dethklok, and they were amazing. Plus their backdrops are trippy as hell, no drugs required. I envy you for getting to hang out with them.

BTW, is it just me, or does Brent sound just like the singer from Days Of The New during the chorus of Oblivion? When I first heard it, I thought they had him guest-singing on that track or something.

Awesome. I wish good shows would come to my end of the country.
