Maybe a new sticky...

Almost daily I read what people like about their various basses. Just read a thread on snobs. Snobbery based upon brands and $.10 couldn't get a cup of coffee at McD's so I wouldn't give it a second thought. I'm searching for parts to build another 24 fret bolt on 5, 18mm at the bridge with mandolin frets. I like the double P arrangement like the Blacktop Fender Jazz but would prefer the P's reversed. This will accompany my Zolla 4, Carlo Robelli 5 and my Pan-Alembic J bass (1975) and my Gecko5 Wide. I had an old Samick too but I sold it..lol
I really wish this forum had a compendium (sticky ) on where to go to buy parts like bodies and necks, including where to get a neck custom made for a particular application, info on DIY electronics for amps, pedals, pre's and also filter based pre's, and electronic and hardware sources. For example I am looking for a 24 fret Fender Jazz5 neck and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to get one besides finding an old Korean Jazz5 somewhere. I've looked at Warmoth and USACG and B Hefner and the other usual suspects but nothing. Likewise correllating fret sizes to numbers (e.g. 6130 frets or whatever number corresponds to mandolin fret sizes). It would be nice if we can get all the knowledge on this site to coalesce into an info fountain where we can all wet our whistles and build decent functional instruments which will leave us gas money afterwards. A sticky with subsections. Then let the snobs beware. Thoughts ????

There is a collection of threads for DIY amps and preamps in the Amps forum FAQ sticky, as well as a ton of general electronics resources. However, in that world DIY very rarely equals saving any money, beyond simple things like making your own cables.

I've learned a lot of things on this forum. I've assembled my Gecko5 wide and my Zolla4 and have modded my Pan-Alembic Jazz and done lots of work for others from info I gleaned right here. I was hoping this thread could generate some interest in combining the talents of the schematic masters on pre's and DIY circuits along with the experience of those who have successfully found builders who will build necks (which is hard to find IME). Lots of people probably think that the 24 fret Fender jazzes had bigger bodies but the truth is they increased the length of the neck then moved the bridge closer to the neck. So why do all the aftermarket neck suppliers want to tack on an extension rather than make the neck and allow the consumer to work out the scale length and simply move the bridge? Another thing, I mentioned DIY filter based pre's. Surely some 30 odd years since Alembic's inception someone has found out how to assemble some opto amps or FET's into a filter based pre. There's a boat load of talent here I was thinking could pour into a sticky that covers all aspects of building or assembling and DIY circuitry so we can have that second or third instrument ready in case number one breaks down.

Here's a bump for you, hope you get what you want. None of that stuff is really within my personal DIY project building focus I'm afraid.
