Me play drums?!

Alright, I'm in two bands. Playing bass in both until we found out our drummer is balls to the wall-psychotic. Very disappoiting. He never wants to just jam and play, he only wants to "rehearse" when we have a show...plus he's always complaining that he wants to practice, practice, practice. Yet, (I live 30 minutes away) whenever I get there(my two brothers are the other two in the band)he always has an excuse for something and it ends up being us three playing away like usual. We write all the songs, make up the rhythms, lyrics, everything. All the drummer ever does is drink, act pyschotic, and play 4/4 rock-beats on EVERYTHING! The thing is, two of us can play bass(and when he plays bass its not a guitarist playing bass, dude is good). So I'm thinking that we can turn this into a 3-piece. And they want me to play drums as well...so...

1-Give this dude another chance? Kick 'em to the curb and hope he doesn't go crazy...I'm not using the "mental" issue lightly...he's about as messed up as soup sandwiches.
2-Continue with my drum lessons and save for a kit?
3-If so, what kind of kit-I like having different tones. Boomy kick drum...and any cymbal suggestions?
4-Would it just be easier as a 3-piece? We are brothers...but we don't act like it...kinda weird that we get along so well...
5-What do I do to not turn into a...ugh, "drummer". I'm a bassist at heart but I loves the rhythm...

thanks and cheers

If you like drums and are decent at it, sure. But if your heart is with bass, my advice would be to find a new drummer with good experience under his belt.

If you play in two bands, why not mix it up a bit? Playing drums is fun, and if you have any proficiency at all, you should go for it!

IMO, of course...

I agree with Blackbird. Drums and bass go hand in hand. Playing drums can make you a better bass player IMO.

Playing drums will ABSOLUTELY make you an assest as a bassist in a band. Locking in with a drummer after spending time on the the drums has never been easier

Yeah, I'm comfortable with the drums. And I get quite a bit better each time I play. I just need a kit so I can play regularly...any suggestions on a kit?

For a full set including hardware and cymbals, I definately suggest going used to get a high quality kit.

800 ish kit hardware and cymbals?

DDrum diablo punx kit(comes with hardware)499 US
Sabian xs2o crash/ride 129 US
Sabian xs20 hats 149 US

OR
Sabian B8 pack-ride crash and hats-149US

If you can find the money for new head i recommend evans coated for the toms, remo pinstripe for the snare, and remo powerstroke for the kick.

Go to GC and try stuff out, try lots of stuff

I would get this kit.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...Tom?sku=445670

that is a little bit more expensive but WELL worth it. That is basically the best kit IMO that you will find under $1000. Then I guess the sabian B8's would probably suite you till you saved a little more.

Do they sound as good as they look? I'm looking for as deep a sound as I can get...

yes they are very good sounding, they are made out of maple, which is a professional grade wood. The only type of wood more disired for drums are exotic veneers. I'm trying to get my mom to buy this kit for me even though she would pay around 1000-1100.
