Is it me or for some people did music die with early Pink Floyd?

Not quite a rant...okay maybe.

Why is is that at every open mic I wander into there are always three to five guys older then me (and that's hard to find) who want to get up and play every old Pink Floyd tune in the world, followed by any thing that they think makes them a guitar god.

Tonight it was about half of one side of Dark Side of the Moon, followed by a rousing Black Magic Woman.

Is it me, or isn't there anyone out there with just a little more musical variety? How about a simple three chord Ramones tune? Maybe even a touch of electric Dylan? How about an early Beatles tune? I know, why not some Buddy Holly, or heck, even All American Rejects?

Tonight I even had one of the other old dudes tell me that I was really great (sh#$, I should be, only been playing professionally for 30 years) when all I did was pedal root-4-5 during his Stevie Ray Vaughn impression.

UGH!

Pink Floyd kinda doesn't do it for me much.

The Dark Side Of The Moon was really kinda far-out for me (I'm 64 y/o) and I never really found the hook in their music on which I could say: "Now THAT'S great music!!"

I miss the 'Surf-Suds-Sex-Sun' music of my high school years - but I think every generation has that same idea.

My first wife and I would joke about loving and listening to 'our song' and that we'd be sitting in our rockers at the old folks home, reminiscing that 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road' was our wedding song.

You aren't restating the obvious... you're wrong. The "for some people" part is really important. Besides, did you even read the post? He clearly doesn't agree that music ended with Floyd. Reading comprehension people, reading comprehension.

NKUSigEp,
Might want to read the OP again. Looks like you completely missed it.
------------------------
As far as I'm concerned Pink Floyd is just another band in history. They have some songs I like and some I don't. I'm not too into the spacey, mood music, hallucination feeling stuff. For me, they aren't legends or gods or trend setters or whatever...just a band. Don't really care too much about 'em.

Errrr...yes.

I guess if you read nothing but the title before replying you might draw that conclusion (although it seems like a pedantic interpretation), but, if you read the OP the point is quite clear that there are some people who are stuck in a time warp.

I agree with that. It's echoed in the guitar and bass mags as well. I took a long layoff from buying them (at least 10 years) and came back to find that they're still talking about Chris Squire and Geddy Lee. Billy Sheehan, Stuart Zender and Duff McKagan are still there endorsing their ads....nothing's changed, the same old, same old.

Floyd and all of the classic bands are superb (and I'm old enough to have seen nearly all of them, several times, in their original lineups). Squire, Lee, Sheehan et al are all superb bassists but, come on, we musicians do seem to dwell on past eras disproportionately.

You might want to start with actually reading the entire original post.

I didn't realize Dark Side was "early" Pink Floyd.

+1
I do get tired of seeing the same old faces in the gear mags.

going to get hug for this but what the hell..
i am sure some of the older guys might agree..younger people get very defensive about music,i did it when i was brought up on punk, thats all i listened to,all i played.everything else was nasty..most young guys mix up whats good with what they like and there is no talking to them about it..an example is the clif burton thing, metallica fans think he was god..yeah he was good, but not the be all and end all of bass.there is a much bigger picture.if someone does a cover of a song its compared to the orignal and 90% of the time its said to be s***. its ok to like or dislike but its just silly to dis·miss something because you dont like it,metal is metal country is country its ok to like both..

to the OP, be glad they want to play some dark side tunes, because around here all I can ever seem to find is a bunch of guys jamming on random blues tunes. EVERY guitar player thinks he's SRV around here, and they all think they are better at SRV then the 15 other guitarists in the room, so for every song they just try to out-SRV each other

I WISH they would play some dark side or "actual" early pink floyd like intersteller overdrive

For me, music died with Kurt Cobain.
It came back when I heard Coltrane.
