MELVINS

To say the least, its been a great month for Melvins fans in the Los Angeles area. They took residency at Spaceland in Silver Lake each friday in January playing some of my favorite albums of all time. I was lucky enough to get tickets for each night.

All the nights were double sets. The first was Collosus of Destiny and Lysol/Eggnog. Second was Melvins 1983 (played all of their really early hardcore/punk material) and Houdini. Third was Melvins Lite (just Buzzo and Dale) and Bullhead. The last night was a regular set and then Stoner Witch.

Some highlights included the original drummer from 1983 played and dale was on bass for those songs, Brent from Mastodon came out and played second guitar for "The Bit" with them. They closed with "Boris" on the Bullhead night, not only is that one of the heaviest songs ever written, but they slowed it down and it sounded menacing.

Here are some pics I took with my crappy phone camera:

Nice. Didn't Trevor Dunn play with them at one point?

Yeah. I saw these shows in the rags but sadly I couldn't go. A buddy of mine is close with Mastodon and I was invited but still couldn't go. Sounds epic. Wish I was there.

Yeah he played with them for a few years starting in 2005 I think. He was also in Fantomas with Buzz.

Huh. I helped a friend run sound for a Melvins show in '95... they were loud. That's all I got.

He's in Mastodon. Just did a guest appearance with the mighty Melvins that night.

Does anybody know what gear Mark Deutrom used on Stoner Witch?

I love the bass sound on that album. It sounds somewhat like a J Bass with roundwounds but any idea what sort of amp he was using? A GK perhaps?
