OK; weird story here....
Once a year since local songwriter and performer Jerome Wheeler passed away three years ago now, some of us that played in his various bands over the years put together a tribute show for him; called "Jerome-Fest."
Various perfomers do his material and other favorites during the day long event.
5 of us guys that used to work with him at various points in "The Catnip Mouse Band" closed the show this weekend, doing a set of all his original stuff. This crew forms one of the other bands I work with called "The Fried Crawdaddies," so we jokingly called this years band "The Fried Mice."
The show was way out in the country in the little town-Lupus, population 29-down on the Missouri River. Not underwater yet, but scheduled to maybe get pretty wet as the river was going to come up another 4-5' after midnight.
On the way into town, I almost hit one rabbit; then, missed another. Narrowly missed a deer, and then an owl. I don't know what that was about, but I "did notice all that.'' Wierd.
I got there a couple sets early, watched some of the other performers, ate some of the grub, had a few drinks with the crowd, who were energised, and having fun.
We get set-up, get moving into the material...folks are dancing, carrying on, generally having a good time. We were the last act of the day, people were enjoying the "re-incarnation" of one of the old favorite bands around here.
About 40 minutes into the set, this lady dancing right in front of me abruptly hits the ground...down like a shot. After a few seconds of her not getting up, the band starts dropping out. Several of us make the call to 911.
CPR was applied for 20 minutes or so til the first EMT was on site, another 5-8 minutes before the first fire truck reaches the scene, with an AED. Ambulance arrives, helicopter is circling trying to find a place clear of trees and power lines to land. An hour or so of CPR later, they finally get her on the chopper and lifted out. She never appeared to be responsive, and the outcome is "presumed bad," tho I have no official word on that.
Maybe too late for your prayers, I dunno. Completely un-nerving for that to happen anywhere, much less at a Memorial kinda deal...
