Metal - A Headbangers Journey

Hi folks

Went to see this doco last night and would highly recommend it to all musicians, even those (like me) who aren't really into the heavy metal genre.

It is a really well put together documentary and quite detailed. I especially liked the way they made a family tree out of all the varying sub-genres.

I went with a friend and we spent about an hour discussing heavy metal music after we came out - a sign of a good doco IMHO.

I saw this documentary a couple weeks ago and I thought it was really well done. I liked it because, as a metal fan, it's cool to hear about the history and see the whole family tree of how the subgenres branch out. And to see interviews with Dio, Tony Iommi, Bruce Dickenson, Lemmy, and all those other bands.

But the cool thing is that it appeals to people that don't like metal and, I think, helps them understand why it's fans are so die hard.

Plus the interview with the guys from Mayhem is pure comedy gold.

Yup, you definitely should check it out Major, you'd love it

the interview with Mayhem is pure comedy gold, the segment with Dee Snyder is excellent, the really edgy stuff about Norwegian Death Metal is creepy...

simply put - a recommended doco for all muso's.

Saw it on VH1. I liked how it went into the tribal psyche of the fans themselves instead of only documenting the development of the music.

Metal Clinics

Has anyone been to any metal clinics? just yesterday i went to see Flo Mourier at a metal clinic...they come to different cities. this was a drum workshop but i have been to a guitar shop too. The clinic hosts give tips and such to bass players of every skill level. You even have a chance to win things. I won a strap once

if its the one i am thinking of, i've seen it on VH1.

in a nutshell, they concluded that Led Zeppelin were the blue-print for heavy metal, aswell as Black Sabbath.

i agree on Sabbath, but the Zep always seemed more hard rock/blues rock to me than heavy metal.

but the doco pointed that out, and mentioned it was infact the stage presence and offstage antics of Led Zeppelin that made them 'metal'.

I've seen it multiple times, and as a metal fan, I love it.

It hits the nail on the head in every aspect about how i feel about metal. I would recommend it to metal and non-metal fans alike. Excellent documentary.

I know this thread is old, but this doc kicks ass. I DVR'd it. My favorite is when they're talking to those psycho black metal dudes. HILARIOUS.

Also, the supplemental feature about the foxy Scandinavian belly dancer who dances to metal was AWESOME.

Great documentary: as someone else pointed out it was great for it not simply to be a timeline or a listing of metal bands, but a sociological look into the fandom of metal and what it is.

Caught part of it the other day on VH1 Classic. Very well done. I love that the guy did his thesis on the sociology surrounding the genre.
