Mic placement in "Treme"

Sign in to disble this ad
I was watching the HBO (or Showtime) series "Treme" last night, and in it there was a scene in a studio where Dr. John was recording some tracks. Either they shot it in an actual studio, or they did a pretty good job with the mock-up, but there was one thing that puzzled me. Dr. John was sitting at the piano singing into a large diaphragm condenser mic (it looked like a Studio Projects B-1), but into the top of it; it was pointed at him like it was a dynamic mic. Did they just get that wrong, or is that a micing technique with LDC's? If it was wrong, you'd think that Dr. John would know better, even if it was just a fake studio.

it coulda been a front address mic - some look confusing. or maybe an extreme off axis (though never seen anyone do it like that though) . . . or fake

any pics of the mic?

There are people that 'sing into the mic' and there are people that sing through the pickup pattern.

I think that if you "knew better" you'd recognize that both have their place.

Sorry, I don't get what you are trying to tell me. Are you saying that singing into the top of a LDC is a technique? I'm not saying that it's not, just that I've never seen anyone do that and it looked a little odd to me.

Treme is one of the best portrayals of a musicians life I've seen. Great series!

I remember the episode, but not the specific mic. Are you sure it wasn't an RE20, like this?

Singing into the top of an LDC will produce less than desirable results- I imagine that by now, Mr. Rebennack knows which end of a mic to sing into.

I'm sure it wasn't an RE20; I was watching it on On Demand, so I paused it, rewound, etc. to get as good a look at the mic as I could. I couldn't see a logo, but it looked superficially identical to my SP B-1's - a screen "window" on each side and a screen across the top.

I love the series; I am a musician, I even play a bit of trombone, I am from south Louisiana and have spent lots of time in New Orleans (I recognize many of the street scene locations), and a good friend of mine is in the show. He plays one of the gay neighbors.
