Michael Jackson Appreciation Thread

Haters, please leave, go moan somewhere else about Michael Jackson. This thread is only for the fans.

I woke up this morning like any morning; while not paying attention to the news I put on on the tv in the background I browsed talkbass. I saw the locked thread about MJ's death and at first couldn't believe it. Turned up the volume on the tv and there it was. Michael Jackson is dead. Cardiac arrest in the middle of the night. It's a big loss for all musicians around the world. I mean, who hasn't been influenced by Michael's music? Which bassplayer hasn't ever played a Michael Jackson line? From the early Motown days of I want you back and ABC to his first solo album Off the Wall. Who can forget hits as: Bad, Billy Jean, Smooth Criminal, Man in the Mirror, The way you make me feel, The girl is mine, Wanna be startin somethin, P.Y.T., Beat it and of course Thriller.

Michael Jackson, tonight I drink in your honour.
Rest in Peace.

Micheal is responsible of my addiction to music, so by this way to the fact i started one day to play music, then bass.
Thriller was the very first BLAST i took in my head, as i was ten.
Thank you Micheal, rest in peace...

Loved his music. The whole transformation thing freaked me out a bit but I understand why he did it and I felt sorry for him when he got so much bad publicity... Oh well, he was a musical genius and I always enjoy listening to his songs.

Repeated for emphasis.

No doubting Michael's wide-reaching influence on popular music, whether you consider him to be a musician or not. For me, I think he has a special little place in the bass world, merely for writing such a groovy and funky bassline as Billie Jean.

I just hope that the reports aren't true; that, after such a life and such a career, that something as stinky as drug abuse has taken him.

RIP Michael.

He was an eccentric guy, but he wrote a mean tune!

We'll be dusting off Smooth Criminal this weekend in tribute.

Anyone else playing a MJ tune or two this weekend?

I had to listen to my copy of "Off The Wall" yesterday after hearing the news... being in high school during the early 80 there was no way to avoid his influence.

Oddly enough, I'm pretty certain I have never played a Michael Jackson bassline in my life.

Although after I heard the news yesterday I started humming the bassline to "Billie Jean" and realized I could (and should) play it at tonight's gig.

I'm not a hater, more an indifferent apathist, but you can't deny the incredible impact his music had on pop culture. And anything that calls attention to the phenomenal bass playing of Louis Johnson on MJ's seminal recordings is a Good Thing in my book.

Here's my all time favorite bassline from an MJ tune, and definitely in the top 3 of my favourite lines ever:

As I've aged I've grown to appreciate and greatly respect the work of MJ. 25 years ago I was not a fan (not into MJ's genre), but as I've opened up my mind and music collection I gotta say "man, what a musical genius!!".

It's gotten to me, not as much as Layne Staley or Diamond Darrell, but MJs death is definitely in my head. I really wanted to see him come back a little, but such is life. Even before Thriller there was so much he gave to us. Everyones got demons.

That said, he made thriller.......thriller.....
