Mitch Mitchell dies

Mitch Mitchell, drummer and last surviving member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, was found dead in a Portland, Ore., hotel Nov. 12.
Mitchell was touring with the "Experience Hendrix Tour," which wrapped its West Coast leg Nov. 7.
Sgt. Brian Schmautz, a Portland police spokesman, told the Oregonian that an employee at the upscale Benson Hotel called police after discovering Mitchell's body. "It was natural causes," Schmautz said, "so we weren't involved beyond that."
Mitchell pioneered a drumming style that would later be known as fusion. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 as part of the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Why do all my favorite musicians end up dying just when I'm really getting into them?

I've been "rediscovering" Hendrix recently, listening to the original recordings along with the newer releases like South Saturn Delta and First Rays... I also bought the DVD release of Experience Hendrix and man-o-man, what a rhythm section Mitch and Billy Cox were.

Mitch looked healthy enough in the DVD from last year and I'm saddened by his passing.

Hendrix is the reason I became a musician so Mitch has always been one of my favorite drummers. He was like the Elvin Jones of rock. I'm going to miss him.
