Modern (Indie?) Rock Cover Bands-Any out there?

Hi all, looking for some input and advice. The drummer/part time singer from my original funk/rock band has moved away leaving the rest of the band with some decisions to make. We're left with a trio of Guitar, Bass and drums (former percussionist on the kit). We all sing. We really had some good songs and great performances, but ran into the standard issues of an original band (low pay, playing empty rooms, etc).

We're thinking about going in a new direction to keep it fresh as well as do something more marketable. The other two guys have kept up with what's going on currently in the music scene while I have stayed in my comfort zone of older stuff, classic rock, jazz, jam bands etc,.

We're considering learning new material and focusing on current " indie rock" stuff and music that is on the radio these days. -Spoon, the Kooks, Arcade Fire,Ray Lamontagne,The Killers, whatever Jack White is doing at the moment...current music outside the Lady Gaga, Rihanna realm.

Wondering if anyone sees opportunity for this type of band out there playing "what the kids are listening to." I'm very used to either the original band or the classic rock scene in Chicago. Neither seems to be a fit for what we're considering. I'd really like to go in a direction that might draw some crowds and possibly make a few buck of this project. Thoughts anyone?

I think it really depends on what your local scene is like. If there is a vibrant scene of young originals indie acts, you are probably jumping into a pretty crowded pool and the hipsters will be headed towards the originals acts. (insert hipster+shallow end of the pool joke here.)

If there isn't so much live indie/alternative going on, I definitely think it could be a good way to get the younger crowds to come out.
