Modern Rock Music -> Punk????

Why are modern rock bands using the label of Punk or Punk Rock?

Sorry, but I just don't get it.

Or has the word Punk just became "trendy". I know the Sex Pistols had a stylist at one stage.

Because it makes trendy teens feel special and rebelious. The whole "rebel" thing sells.

Punk was always just a loose label, describing those that fit against the norm and played simple yet heartfelt music, fighting against the rules and standards of society and building their own genre. I guess new bands like Simple Plan fit the genre since they're playing that simple rock, expressing their feelings, and building their own fanbase. Punk is trendy, if you haven't noticed. Thankfully, though, there are many punk bands to listen to nowadays that aren't crap, even though these bands are hard to find in the mainstream. One needs only to listen to Pennywise or Bad Religion's new stuff, or even Rise Against, to hear some good stuff amidst the mainstream. They're no Sex Pistols but they're making some really good music with a point.

No one knows what the labels mean anymore.

They just enjoy labeling.

An even more important question: who cares?
