Which is the more critical piece of PA gear-Compressor or Aural Exciter?

With no info on how or where you'd use it, I'd say compressor.

What exactly would you do with each? Channel inserts with the compressor on whatever input you need compressed or gated would probably be the most beneficial if you are starting with nothing.

Neither are critical...Aural Exciters are a waste of money and compression should only be used if absolutely necessary. In the hands of an amateur it can do more harm than good.
