Which is more important in rock music? Guitar or Bass?

I'd say guitar because in most genres of rock, guitar is more audible and given more credit than bass. And many rock bands don't have a bassist. I can't think of one that doesn't have a guitarist.

The Riff is the most important thing in rock.

Lightning Bolt, Death from Above 1979, and Lullabye Arkestra are all guitarless and amazing.

edit: Ned's Atomic Dustbin and Toast Machine (iirc) are a couple more.

Well, I was the first one to vote, so BASS is winning at this point. Which line do you hum, the guitar line or the bass line? When you turn your radio down so you barely hear it at night, what do you hear besides the bass, drum snare and cymbals, and vocals?

I vote bass because of the key role, but then thought about it and i'd say equal. IMO 'hard' rock can hardly be hard without a guitar riff, but if it's ANY type of rock, bass can outway guitar easily.

Guitar stands out more and will get more attention, but you don't see many bands without both of them and thats for good reason.

+1

Before I even saw the options I was hoping for a 'It depends on the players themselves', then saw the 'Both' and went for it.

Even though the guitar is generally the most obvious I've seen bassists who could carry everything quite well, especially with a drummer to back them.

if the bassist and the drummer can't groove (even in a rock song) the track is worthless IMO. so i'd have to say the rhythm section in general.

Good point, Black Keys are excellent. Not same style but I also like Pink & Brown, Coachwhips, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

It's too general a question to really answer properly. So I'll just say Guitar...Generally speaking

I said guitar.

Sorry, but it's true. In rock, the riff is king. Most [rock] songs are defined by the electric guitar riffs and the vocals—between bass & guitar, it has to go to guitar.
