| | | | The thing that blows my mind is that when I think about the people I know who listen to specific genres, they don't like the stuff on the list.
For example, the people I know who are heavy into rap would think that rap on that list sucks. The people that I know who are into pop music would think the same. The indy kids as well.
Quite frankly, I have no clue who they are trying to appeal to. |

Quite frankly, I have no clue who they are trying to appeal to. | They aren't trying to appeal to the people who listen to specific genres. Those peopel tend to be divisive and very strict about what constitutes that specific type of music. Their magazing appeals to the vast majority of people who
(A) aren't musicians so they don't care about overt virtuosity
and
(B) will listen to whatever genre they like as long as it's catchy
To the credit of Rolling Stone, they didn't just pick from the list of songs that hit top 5 on the Billboard charts. Even if you don't like the music, at least they listened to music and made a decision instead of just looking at sales. |

I get it via subsciption (thanks for the birthday pressie mum you old baby boomer you) and by the time it lands at my door the info is out of date/no longer relevant etc. We've become accustomed to instant information thanks to the internet. The first couple of pages are always devoted to pics of celebrities jamming with rock stars, about 1/3 of the total thing is ads. It's just not an accurate reflection of the local scene around here nor the country even though it does have localized content included. I prefer the local street press, most of which is published weekly and the net for my music news. My kids won't even read it as they think it's for old people. |

Songs on that list like Wilco, Empire State of Mind, Boom Boom Pow are pretty good music. I can't help but enjoy it, even if I don't like who they are or what they're about. I've never shaken my *** to boom boom pow in the club, but its got a sick groove. It is a pretty strange list with Miley Cyrus, Jay Z, and U2 all close together. One thing that I do love about it though is that Lady GaGa is not on it! I'm suprised Muse isn't on there.

really? that's unusual. I'm 45 years old and have heard every one of them. I could understand john q public not hearing them but you are posting on a musical forum so I am assuming that you have somewhat of an interest in music. |

And oddly enough, I do like Miranda Lambert. As far as I am concerned, she is one of the country performer that I admire, since she is a real singer/songwriter. Plus her songs don't sound like a cookie cutter manufactured hit.
Beyond that, I doubt I could actually set down and listen through any of those songs from start to finish.
Face it, most of the lists we would come up with (I really could make a list of the stuff I listen to as far as best-to-worse), the Rolling Stone community probably wouldn't know who the performers are anyway.

Oh, and "Paparazzi" is better than "Bad Romance".

Depends what your listening preferences are...
Seems like a lame list to me. Most of those artists will be forgotten...

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: USA | | | I've heard of about half of those artists. However, I'm not sure if I have heard any of those songs listed. This is what I can say about the artists I know something about.
1. Miranda Lambert. I'm not a country fan at all. But as far as I know, I have heard that Miranda Lambert is the real deal. For someone liking country music, this may actually be something good.
2. Franz Ferdinand. My first impression of them was not good because the song they were doing sounded almost exactly like Modest Mouse. I cannot stand Modest Mouse. Maybe some of Franz Ferdinand's songs are better than the one that sounded like Modest Mouse. I hope so.
3. Black Eyed Peas. Not interested in that genre.
4. Lady Gaga. I have heard a few of her songs. I didn't like any of them.
5. Pearl Jam. I have never listened to Pearl Jam very much. As far as I know, they're a good band but I haven't heard that song.
6. Miley Cyrus. I'm sure she is fine to listen to if you are 12.
7. Bruce Springsteen. One of the most overrated artists in American history. As another bassist recently stated on another board, when he sings it sounds like he is straining to have a bowel movement.
8. U2. I have tried really hard to give U2 a chance through the years, but have never liked their music. It sounds really bland.
9. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. The genres they're in is of no interest to me at all. I have listened to several Alicia Keys songs. That first hit she had was pretty good. But everything I have heard since then sounded uninspired.
On a personal level, though, I have nothing against any of those artists. I honestly wish all of them well, although they seem to be doing fine without my support. I do have to say, though, that Miley Cyrus gets on my nerves because of her immaturity. I do make an effort to avoid her completely. She is the only artist on there that I have no tolerance for at all. |
