Most unneccesary guitar solo?

My vote goes to Zakk Wylde's song "In This River." The solo is just a bit too hyper for the rest of the song.
Here is the video for it

Ack! I totally despise that song. I know Zakk meant it as a tribute to Dime but it just sucks. Let the flames begin!

I love the live version of that song with the two guitar solos (begining and end) I love the passion Zakk has on his face when he plays them. But, I think its a bit harsh to judge anything by Zakk as the most unnecessary guitar solo given that's what all his songs are - vehicles for his guitar solos.

Besides...there can only be one true answer to this question:

FREEBIRD!

Anything with Zakk or Dime soloing. Both of them I could not abide!

I've always hated the solo Vernon Reid did on Cult of Personality.

My vote goes to most fast "virtuoso" song like by Vai, Malmsteen, Satriani, Michael Angelo, etc.

Not all of their songs are wankfests, but a lot of them are.

Yeah he does play them with passion. I just think on this song the solo could have been toned down a bit more if you catch my drift. The song has this soft flowing feel to it, and then it seems to me he is like, eh, whatever, *insert stereotypical zakk wylde shred minor pentatonic solo*.

I think he felt the need to shred my face just because he is Zakk Wylde...and thats what he does.

Same here, I know it's supposed to sound outside and over the top, but in my opinion it's simply too long. I eventually read somewhere that Vernon was pretty much the leader of Living Colour and suddenly everything made sense.

It's not like I don't like "outside"-sounding solos, I could listen to King Crimson and Primus all day.

That's what I call a Tufnel-esque solo. It's pretty tuneless. He would have done better if he had just played sustained long notes like on the intro.

Whomever, they need to not hehe. I do think it was Neil though - according to this kinda odd list anyhow:

A guy who's hit & miss with me all the time, on perhaps his worst solo ever recorded:

Tom Morello's solo for "Original Fire".

I love Tom Morello's soloing, and I like that one as well. I agree that it doesn't fit the song too well, though I'd hardly call it "unnecessary".

Heh. Sometimes I think I'm the only one who loves Neil Young's soloing. I love the solo in Southern Man!

I wouldn't say it's totally unnecessary, but as big of a Rush fan as I am, I've always hated the guitar solo in Tom Sawyer.

Slipknot - Pulse of the Maggots.

It's like a sweep that failed.

And this is coming from a guy who has a relative amount of liking for Slipknot.

what about most unnecessary bass solo? oh wait not enough songs have any to answer that question.

besides isn't any rock song since 1972 just a vessel for a guitar solo, for people to put up lighters and go "i love this part" and air guitar to.

That was quiet good until 2:45 when he just wanks out, that totally ruins the song. I think they should cut the song short at 2:45

P.S I dont think Dime ever played a note too many and never over cooked any song IMO!
