You may have seen this already, but in my mind it's a classic that many of us could learn from. He's a writer, but this could apply to any creative pursuit.

My guess is that many of our favorite musicians probably put out a lot of crap before anyone was aware of their existence. The ones who made it were the ones who moved through the crap and the covers and discovered what it was they had to offer.

Thoughts?

So true. Great message. We need to hear this and hear it often. There are so many creative things we see, hear and witness everyday that are darn near perfect that comparing ourselves to them is very hurtful. Even the 'Muzak" in the grocery store is in tune, well balanced and carefully arranged.

We need to remember that failure is a sign that we're trying and that's more important than anything else. Failure is a valid human experience. Don't fear it.

At the school where I teach there was an English teacher who regularly kept a bulletin board display of all the rejection letters he had (and continuted to get). His students saw the continuing struggle he had with his vison versus his work.

Definitely a great message. I work in many creative endeavors both within music and other projects. I once had a President of a company I worked for tell a creative team I was on that he would rather we went out and came up with things and tried them and failed than to sit and do nothing. The lesson being that at least we tried something and we would learn from what we did.

I've said something along these lines for years now to people who wanted to start painting or playing music, although far less eloquently. Everyone sucks for a few years when they start- just be aware of that fact and you won't beat yourself up so badly when things aren't going well. If you don't quit, you will get better no matter what.

That's great! Must have really helped his students get their heads in the right place, especially since English students can be among the cockiest and surest that success is around the corner for them, if only they'd finish that damn [novel, short story compilation, book of poetry]

Motivational post-mortem bump for a message that has inspired me and, I hope, could inspire you in this new year of 2012! Play no matter your skill/frustration/inspiration level! Make those basses sing and those rumps shake. Make 2012 the Year of Bass (YOB)!

Excellent.

edit: I had to come back and edit this because I misspelled "excellent". LOL!

Or as my grandfather used to tell me. "Everyone wants to play the piano, nobody wants to learn how."
