"The Blues has always been totally American - As American as apple pie, as American as the Blues, as American as Apple Pie. The question is 'Why? Why should the Blues be so at-home here'? Well, American provided the atmosphere..." -Gil Scott-Heron

"You want to figure out how you want to play the guitar; what your niche would be. Well you just start digging deeper. When you're digging deeper in rock and roll you're on a freight train heading straight for the blues." - Jack White

I heard Carlos Santana quote someone when asked about choosing what notes to play. I don't remember who he said said it first, but it's stuck with me.

He said something to the effect of: Playing music is a lot like picking fruit; You only pick the notes that are ripe.

Well, there's the one in my signature from T.R. Kelly, which I copped from a post she had on The Bottom Line that's pretty vital.

And there's these I've acquired over the years...
“There are only two kinds of music; music that sounds good, and whatever you want to call that other stuff.” Duke Ellington

“There are more bad musicians than there is bad music.” Isaac Stern

"...the point is this: It's not crappy music if someone is enjoying it, and if someone is enjoying, you could be enjoying it too." Nate Bellon

And of course "Life is too short to waste any of it on cheap beer or bad drummers" John Evans

John

One summer during the hair metal heyday of the mid 1980's, I painted houses with a Berklee music student, who was into alternative bands like Japan. One day he said: "Lots of bands these days look really weird, but sound really normal. I'd rather look normal, but sound really weird." Words to live by.
