MTV: Pullin' Me Back #1, TBers UNITE, defend intellectual property

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all, as all of you know, Chingy's new single "Pullin' Me Back" rips off "Portrait of Tracey". I don't think Chingy ever announced or "gave mad props" to the late Jaco for using a main riff in Portrait of Tracey. MTV plays this video constantly and its at #1. I was thinking of forming a coalition to have TRL (the show that plays music videos) recognize Jaco everytime Pullin' me back is played. I've heard that people love the melody used in "Pullin' me back" and they praise Chingy for it, when they should be praising Jaco. If Chingy isn't going to recognize Jaco (majorly atleast, i've heard he recognized him in fine print on the album) then perhaps a major distributor (MTV) should. mayb we can write an email and write our names on the email to show widespread support of the idea. Just an idea, i'm open to flaming n such

Yeah, that'll happen. Right after Led Zepplin tells the world that they owe Muddy Waters "mad props" on live TV. If he's using the sample, it means the folks who own the intellectual property agreed to it and are being paid for it. They aren't owed anything.

He may have recognized it in fine print, but that's recognition, and considering he hasn't had his butt sued off yet, it means that it was recognition with permission. That's A LOT more than Vanilla Ice gave Queen.

Here's something you've gotta understand about this business. Alot of the time, the artists are given blind tracks to use. Chingy has no clue where that riff came from. Hell, he probably didn't know the producer before this. Save your letters and emails. Use them to fight pig porn or something like that. Besides, Jaco is getting "mad props". It's called a publishing check. If you really care, then let's hope this record goes triple platinum, so the estate can get more money. And for the last time, if you're paying for it, you ain't ripping it off.

Hey, just because you're not from West Virginia doesn't mean you aren't depriving someone.

I don't believe the Jaco estate is getting any money from it. there is that whole thing about sampling that they are allowed to do, but isn't right.

He's listed as a writer. That's all they need. The estate's getting paid. Awhile back, there was a rule that said that if you sampled under 8 bars, you were good to go. Those days are gone. Trust me, Jaco's family's is getting money for the song. I do this for a living, so I HAVE to know the copyright rules.

Do a search. There was a thread about this and the Pastorious estate is getting paid. That should be the end of this unless you just a have problem with rap period.

It happens, but it has it's ups and downs.

Remember that P. Diddy track that sampled Led Zeppelin's Kashmir? Little kids thought that riff was awesome, and praised P. Diddy... however, I know quite a few who were turned on to Zeppelin because of that. Not something I'd argue with.

Maybe a new breed of Jaco fans in the making?

Unfortunately, that wasn't a sample, AND he was given Page's blessing! That song was horrible!

That's what I mean... and the song was bad, but new Zep fans came out of it.

i do have a problem with rap, period. its not music, its crap, people talking about killing, raping, beating people up. its breeding a new hate culture plagued with violence. certain rap is OK but most of it preaches violence, hatred, n disrespect

Unlike NuMetal, rock, and punk. As you can see that broad brush is two sided. I like your logic. I hate cats, therefore; they're not animals!

Hmmmmm ...

Sounds similar to what was said about Rock & Roll 50 years ago.

the majority of rock isn't as straight forward as "slap that ho" or "its cold outside for a pimp". there is a section of rock that is violent, and there is a section of rap that is kind, but thats a very small percentage of the music
