Saw this on yahoo and thought it was kind of interesting. Of course, MTV hasn't really been about music for some time but the company now seems to embrace it. It really sucks that a channel that used to break new music and genres is now reduced to trash reality television. I guess it's a sign of the times. Doesn't give me much faith in the intelligence of the American public.

Rush was the FIRST Saturday night concert on M-TV. They were the first to air Exit...Stage Left. J.J. Jackson hosted the show. I didn't have M-TV yet, but I listened to the show as it was broadcast on many FM stations while it was on M-TV.
The first video I ever saw on M-TV was Rush's Limelight (from ESL) and every day, every hour, I could count on seeing a lot of great tunes from a lot of good bands. Then, like two years later M-TV took a big dump.
There's not been the "M" in M-TV for a long time. Good riddance.

They show tons of commercials. I'll bet the average half hour show on there is about 8 minutes of actual screen time!

They actually showed videos and would do interviews and docs. on bands. VH1 started to carry the flag for a while but now they have gone the way of reality trash for the most part too. By and large VH1 is cooler than MTV now which is also wierd because VH1 used to be all about music my mom liked.

| | | | MTV's parent company is Viacom. However, CBS Corporation actually has three independent subsidiary companies
CBS Corporation
Viacom
Westinghouse Electric Corporation
Among these three mega companies, they operate so many businesses you would not believe it. |

I've been told that the music video is a dying medium, anyway. I don't think I've seen anything interesting in a video since 1992.

It means people are less and less interested in being force fed bad music by a giant corporation. People can easily go listen to(watch) any music(video) that they want whenever they want with little regard as to which albums Viacom wants you to buy.

VH1 is almost as bad as MTV. Doesn't MTV own VH1 & CMT?
