Music College Audition...HELP!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
So I'm chasing my dreams and it led me to be given a chance and a place at a very prestigious music college. Trouble is I am self-taught and need to absolutely blow them out of the water in the audition.

There are two rules for the audition.
1.There must be two songs played no more no less.
2.They must not be self-composed.

I was thinking of doing Portrait of Tracy and More Love, but I kinda figured they would be too cliche'..any other suggestions for songs to play?

Do a few searches as this topic has been done many times before. And yes, PoT is VERY over done.

I would look at what the curriculum that the school offers, and pick two songs that show your strengths but also fit in line with what they're going to teach you. It's great to pick two bass solos, but given that schools are known for cranking out solo electric bassists as much as working musicians, I'd find at least one jazz or rock tune that has a very in-depth bassline that can show off your grooving ability over your chops.

If the requirements are so non-descript, it might be worth looking at requirements for other schools of similar caliber. What does Berklee require? I think that at least one of the songs should be a reasonably up-tempo jazz standard where you can play the melody, a walking bass line through the changes, and a solo.

The audition will doubtlessly have a sight-reading component as well.

A couple of lessons with an educated instructor (i.e., they've been through music school themselves) might be a good investment, to help you prepare.
