So I have to do one of these 20 pages projects in my french class.. (not sure how they are called in english... essays I would guess?)

So I thought doing it about a music genre. The first genres that came to mind were Jazz and Funk.. I was wondering if anyone knows where I could get information such has the history etc... on one of the genres ? Which one would I find more information about ? Jazz I guess?

Thanks

Jazz originated out of american south as a blend of european and african music. Jazz's history intertwines with slavery and the oppression of black so it should make for a good history project.

Good luck with the french part though. you're on your own with that one.

An encyclopedia is always a good starting point. Try this one:

Encyclopedia Britannica

It has 24 pages on Jazz alone. Good luck!

A Library is also a good place to look.

They have books.

So do Amazon:

Jazz Styles by Mark Gridley is great source for Jazz history & defintions/characteristics of Jazz' genres/sub-genres.

Wow...the cost of this book has skyrocketed since the '80s.

Here's a previous edition at a much better price.

Jazz-Rock: A History by Stuart Nicholson is also very good.

Man I wouldnt be excited about writing a 20 page paper in my native language let alone another one. I could write a 20 page paper on punk easily, but thats cuz im pretty into it. I think funk would be hard becuase it hasnt been a super lasting genre. Like you'll see funk bands around today, or what they call funk, but its not as widely accepted genre as jazz or rock and roll, or blues.

On another note i once watched spinal tap in french, knowing no french. Man I learned alot of funny french words that day.
