Music Heirarchy.

Sign in to disble this ad
So as it's been recently explained to me, there is a musical heirarchy in terms of ability and talent that goes something like this. Classical, Jazz, Funk, Blues, Rock/Metal, country, rap. True? False? any categories missing. The person I heard this from isn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer.

I would *love* to watch a classical player attempt to compete in a freestyle rap duel. That would just make my freakin' year.

That list sounds about right, because there's no music other than Western European and North American music out there.

Where are all the back country bluegrass festivals in that list?

Musical hierarchy my hairy hiney! What you got there is someones opinions founded solely in narcissism.

How can one really lay out such a thing?

I agree.

It's all music, and music is a means of communicating with other musicians, as well as the listener. If you can portray emotion through any type of music, and if people can identify with that emotion, then how much higher is there to go ? Granted, some music is technically more complex to play, but that does not necessarily make it "better", or "superior".

No.

Dull knives shouldn't be "explaining" anything.

Could you ask the person who told you this where chiptunes and polka fit in on his list and report back? I'm genuinely curious, really!

... in western music, you mean.

But anyway, I wouldn't support this kind of generalization, too. There's no such thing as "music hierarchy", I'd say.

While there are many non 12 tone musics in the world, my answer was directed towards the music styles/genres listed in the op...
