Music Room and Acoustics

I'll be moving into my first house in a couple of weeks and my wife has granted me a Music Room.

Our house will be furnished nicely, and I don't feel like breaking that mold, and making this room an exception and draping the walls with foam and the like, but at the same time I know that for acoustics it would be better for the acoustics inside the room, and would also dampen the noise levels outside of it.

So, what are some practical ways to put as much soft material in the room while keeping it looking nice? The floor is hardwood, so I plan to put a large, thick area rug, and curtains on one wall that drape to the floor, but are there any other things I can do that would help?

Also, are there any tips as to where to put my bass cabinet? I'm thinking of putting it against the wall across from the curtain covered window. The door for the room is on this wall. Would it be better to put it on another wall, in the centre of a wall or in a corner, or on a 45 degree angle in a corner? Also, should I put some foam behind the cabinet?

Any kind of advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Matt

Maybe to add curtains that you can open on walls?

I would start off with keeping the room as empty as possible. The more furniture and other items you bring in the more the sound will get Deadened. I know a drummer who lined all his walls with egg cartons. They also sell acoustic tiles which imagine may be useful/necessary for recording.

GIK Acoustics makes sound absorbing panels that work better than foam and are quite nice looking. They are more expensive than foam though.
