Music Shops in NYC?

Sign in to disble this ad
In 3 days i'll be headed to New York to work as a camp counselor at a kids camp and am wondering where the good music shops are in NYC. I'll probably only be in the actual city for a day or 2, 3 at the very most so I want to know where they are now so I dont spend all day searching when I could be playing. I'll probably be in the heart of the city with no car so getting around will be on foot. I cant wait to get there as the music stores here are all Fender, Ibanez and Musicman (nothing wrong with those, my next bass will probably be an Ibanez) so im anxious to try something that is a little different.

Make your way to 48th Street (right near Times Square). You can't trip without falling into a shop there! Lots of great places...all within spittin' distance of each other!

Enjoy your trip - let us know if you happen to bring anything home with you (WARNING - it'll be hard not to!!!).

I just moved here, Rudy's, Manny's and Sam Ash were cool.
Though the bass selection was not as great as i hoped :/
(boutique wise)

Must be another shop somewhere with a variety of basses

Since im bringing down my current bass (peavey) that will hopefully make it impossible to bring more home...but im sure if I see something special i'll find a way to fit it into my hockey bag im using as a suitcase...or down the leg of my pants if I have to

Well, the NYC music stores are concentrated on 48th Street (near intersection of Seventh Avenue, FYI). But there are a number of others scattered throughout the city (i.e. the Sadowsky shop is in Brooklyn).

Of those on 48th Street, Rudy's has by far the nicest selection of boutique bass gear - with prices to match. Some have complained of excessive attitude from the sales guys there. But I've never had any problem with them - I bought my Nemesis NC-410 combo amp from 'em in 1997. As long as yer not a total noob and don't waste their time, I think they'll treat you fine...

Here is a thread that lists many if not all music stores in and around NYC:

A couple places stand out in my mind.

First, 30th Street Guitars at 236 E. 3oth Street Manhattan. Walking distance from Times Square if you are a young fellow.
They have vintage gear mostly. See this link: http://www.30thstreetguitars.com/home.html

And Guitar Center at 14th Street in lower Manhattan is good .. vintage stuff ... its near NYU.

I recommend you buy a transit pass ... and use the pass for the sub way and/or bus line ... NYC is so easy to navigate with the way the streets are numbered. And you can ride the sub way any time and its safe.

I have been to NYC 3 or 4 times and I just love it there.

Paul
