Musical maturity

My how we grow and how our taste in music changes. The first time I heard Johnny Winter's "Still Alive And Well" stirred my interest in rock/blues. Blues and rock and NOTHING else! It had to be loud and raw. As a freshman in high school ('73), I almost got in a fight with another student over who was the best. He was a big Tower of Power fan, and I was a Sabbath fan, I criticized him for his taste in music; If only he could see my TOP collection now. Although I still enjoy the various styles of music from my youth, I'm currently spinning the Yellowjackets, Bill Evans trio, Joshua Redman, Stanton Moore and the list is growing. It's been an interesting journey!

I think you have 2 years on me. Will never give up my Zep, Zappa, Procol Harem, Trower, Nugent, Beck Bogert Appice, Beatles. Moving on The Cure, New Order, Yaz. Now Breaking Benjamin, Puddle of Mud, Incubus. Just some examples.
Some of the old stuff I poo pooed are now in my collection. Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament.
Things have changed over the years but I have retained a piece of it all. Glad I was around to see what I have seen.

I started just listening to stuff on the radio , not buying cds or anything when I was about 12/13 . Later that year a friend of mine at school got me hooked on Jimi hendrix. I started getting into other bands from that period like The Doors , Love , Yes , The Birds , The Animals. After that I got into Jazz , Old School R&B , Funk , Soul , REggae. Im still a huge hendrix fan , still like the doords and yes. I have a huge music collection with tons of different styles. Ive still never gotten into metal, punk , or pop music from today.

when you re-discover a band or artist, do you kick yourself (or just wonder) what the heck took you so long?

just curious. recently, i've been re-discovering a lot of music i had ignored, and i have just been wondering "what rock was i living under to have possibly missed this?"

Mostly I only add music that I like. It's much less common to hear something I used to love and say "What was I thinking?"

But it does happen.

I just recently started using Yahoo's radio function on Yahoo.com. It has a 'station' marked 'World Beat - New' that plays stuff I listened to on the radio and loved ten years ago. Mostly I'll hear something like Angleique Kidjo's 'Malaika'. It's a gorgeous song, even though I can't unserstand a word of it. <== (Interpret these as 'grooving smileys.')

Then they'll play something from say, Inti-Illimani, and I'll totally dig on that. Maybe some Johnny Clegg and Savuka.

Then after they've lulled me into a secure feeling, they'll throw in some Gamelan stuff or other noise. I actually liked that stuff for alittle while because I knew Robert Fripp was bassing some of his Guitar Oechestra compositions on Gamelan pieces.

I used to dig that, and now it's just noise.
