Yeah I caught that last night. That was the show with the kid that had severe Tourette's but could drum like a madman, right?

It was crazy, it was like he was channeling Keith Moon or something. They never really showed any clips of him playing a groove, but he could really get around the kit.

I saw it, too. I thought it was pretty cool. The autistic pianist was something to see/hear, wasn't he?

Nuts. I wanted to catch this. It sounded like a fascinating show.

Have to check on rebroadcasts.

Not to derail the thread, but in the same vein, did anyone catch the Billy McLaughlin documentary on his dealing with focal dystonia? http://www.billymacmusic.com/dystonia.shtml

A very enlightening presentation. I recommend watching if you get the opportunity.

There's another more recent one airing on PBS that has to do with the brain development of musicians brains as compared to non musicians, how there is significanlty more left / right hemisphere communication, the music centers of the brain, how stroke victims that can no longer speak can still sing and how they use that to teach them how to communicate verbally again...

I think that one is called "Musical Minds"

Both of those programs are worth an hour of your life.

My mother suffered a stroke at age 75 that caused some some pretty serious cognitive problems. She had earned a B.A., an M.A., and done post-graduate work in English. She also played piano and violin.

After the stroke, she had a hard time with memory, the meaning of words, and her math and number skills became almost non-existent; math was nearly impossible, and even remembering phone numbers was hard. However, she could still sit at the piano and play from any of her music, with very few errors. It was more difficult than before, but it was the closest she could come to "normal" in all of her daily activities.

Thank you, very much. I just finished watching the episode. The power of the brain is awe-inspiring.

I haven't seen the special but is it based on work by Oliver Sacks? It sounds a LOT like his new book Musicophilia which I recommend.

Actually I recommend all of his books, especially Anthropologist on Mars.

That is it. He is a participant in the program, and also a subject of one of the studies.
