Musical/theater gigs

I played a number of musicals when I was younger and in a different part of the state.
I would like to get back to playing musicals, but not sure how to go about getting back into it now that I live somewhere where I don't know anybody in the scene.
Any suggestions?

i would think a lot of that stuff is union...if the actors, stage hands et al are union where you live they may hire union players too....

i would love to lay hold of some charts tho' just to see if i'd be capable of playing them

I'm not looking at playing any professional/union gigs. More like regional theater. I never see ads for auditions for the pit - just for actors.

Where are you? How much local/regional theatre is there? How many of the works staged are musicals?

Start going to local productions when you see that it's a musical, find out who the musical director is and talk to them. Find out who the bassists are and find out who they use for subs and if YOU can get on the sub list. If there's only one musical a year and they have a list of 5 principals and 20 subs, it's gonna be hard to break into that.

+1. I do all kinds of theatre jobs for a local community group, mostly high school age kids. Non union, but then again they don't pay the greatest. I look at it as more on my volunteer and charity list!

Go talk to the artistic director of your community theatre groups and see what their policies are. Put your name in the hat, at least as a possible sub.

Good luck! It's a heck of a lot of fun...
